ON MOVIES ~ F/X...

Feature Presentation...
MONDAY MOVIE MEME

Molly looked around for a weekly meme about movies and did not have any luck. So therefore she decided to start her own! Andy will play along as well - hopefully you will too. Go to your blog and create your own post on the topic, linking back to us in your post, then come back and leave a link to your post here in our Comments section. If you don’t have a blog, just share your response in the Comments section.

This week's movie topic is all about Special Effects...

Well, this weekend we helped to celebrate our country's birthday by taking in some truly incredible fireworks. The son of our weekend guests was so inspired he wanted to learn all about how fireworks create the special effects that they do. The movies are full of special effects - sometimes magical scenes or strange creatures, but more often than not, things getting blown up! Here are our choices for movies that contain wicked awesome special effects. Share on your blog SFX films that blew you away, linking back here at The Bumbles. And don't forget to visit your fellow participants!
  • Star Wars (1977) - The first special effects we ever saw were from Star Wars. And you know what? It still holds up today. Amazing. We still dream of blowing up the Death Star in magnificent fashion.
  • LOTR - The Two Towers (2002) - Lets face it. This entire trilogy of films was spectacular in its effects. But that battle scene at the end of The Two Towers seals the deal. Not to mention walking trees kicking ass in another part of Middle Earth. So incredibly cool.
  • Jurassic Park (1993) - OK. Those dinosaurs looked real. So much so that I began to think the plot was entirely realistic. Which scared me. I don't want to come nose to nose with a living dinosaur. Ever.
  • Saving Private Ryan (1998) - This was the first movie we ever saw on DVD. Good choice. The opening sequence was mind blowing. I felt like I was there - watching the bullets fly underwater in terror, whizzing by my helmet as I came ashore, and storming the bloodied beach. Chills.
  • Forrest Gump (1994) - I know perfectly well that Gary Sinise has both of his legs. But I'm telling you - there is no way to prove it when you see him portray Lt. Dan. It was also cool to marvel at Tom Hanks inserted into all of those historic moments. How'd they do that?
  • Hannibal (2001) - You thought Silence of the Lambs got into your head? Try the sequel. Ray Liotta gets to TASTE what's INSIDE of his OWN head. Nasty!!!! Freaky. And soooo jaw dropping to watch. Oh. And there's a disemboweled dude as well as death by frenzied killer boars. Yup. The effects here make this experience truly horrifying. Just the way I like 'em.
  • The Matrix (1999) - I still don't understand the plot, and I'm not the world's biggest Keanu fan, but I love love love the super slo-mo effects during the fight scenes. It was fresh and new and I ate it up.
Do you have a topic to suggest to the Monday Movie Meme? Or would you like to guest host? Let us know in the Comments section or send us an e-mail.

I agree with all those picks. I think a true test of special effects is you dont look at it in 5,10,20 years time and go "OMG that is so fake".

One movie I would add is Roger Rabbit. I dont know how it has stood the test of time but I remember at the time it was huge.

Also Ghostbusters. The effects look a little dodgy now but still good fun to watch.

I remember seeing Jurassic Park in the theater and hiding behind the seat because my bestie thought sitting in the front row (well the row back from front) was a fantastic idea. Im a big scaredy cat so watched that movie terrified out of my mind LOL (in my defence I was also 13 LOL)

I didn't think I was really into Special F/X movies until I saw your list. Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan and Forrest Gump expanded the genre for me and helped me come up with my own picks this weeks.

I took my FIL to see Saving Private Ryan in the theatre and let me tell you, that opening battle scene was so effective with the surround sound stereo, it felt as if we were in the middle of it ourselves. I actually saw it twice in the theatre...second time with hubby and oldest son. Hubby asked how in the world I could sit through it twice. It was too real for him. And I've watched it a couple of times at home. Have I mentioned that I was hooked on WWII movies as a teenager? Still am.

Ack! You took all of the good ones! But that is half the fun, right? To still come up with other good ones? I thought the Orcs and Gollum were just amazing in LOTR. And Star Wars was really the pioneers of FX weren't they? Anyway, mine are up!

The effects in Star Wars were so far ahead of the curve at the time that it really has to be the turning point of modern special effects. By modern standards it has lost some of its spectacle, but it is like comparing baseball players from different eras. Would Joe DiMaggio be able to hit a 101 MPH fastball? Maybe not, but we cannot compare across eras! (Did this make any sense?)

OMG...that scene in Hannibal about made me throw up!

Jurassic Park, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Independence Day, Star Wars, and the Harry Potter films all have jaw dropping special effects. Oh, and can I add all the Pixar films? Pixar has really changed the animation field.

Terrible movie but The Day After Tomorrow had some great special effects. One of the greats for special effects was Blade Runner which still looks pretty good all these years later.

Now I know never to watch Hannibal (as if), and to definitely attempt Saving Private Ryan.
My favorite part of The Matrix movies was Hugo Loring (?) aka Elrond as Neo's enemy: "But I love me. And there are so many mes..."
Great list. But if someone is going to add Roger Rabbit, then how about Mary Poppins? Dick VanDyke dancing with animated penguins. In 1964.
It's always fun to go to the movies with you!
