ON FUN ~ Worthy Causes...




Edition #6

Thirteen Things about THE BUMBLES -

and a sampling of charities we think are worth donating to in this season of giving...


1. The Jimmy Fund - Fundraising organization & Red Sox charity partner for one of the world's leading pediatric & adult Cancer care & research centers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA

2. Perkins School for the Blind
- Independence education for blind & deafblind @ Helen Keller's alma mater in Watertown, MA

3. Special Olympics - Athletic training & competition for people around the world with intellectual disabilities & special needs - founded in large part by JFK's sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver

4. Fisher House - Provides a free onsite comfort home at Military medical facilities for families tending to hospitalized servicemen & women

5. Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine - Located in MA, The Travis Fund for Needy Animals provides financial assistance to responsible owners for the medical care of their animals as well as to cover costs for found animals

6. Our local library - Financial gifts, in addition to donations of books, CD's and DVD's, always help to keep one of the few remaining FREE services in the community going

7. Audubon Society - Education & advocacy for environmental conservation - we support the local MA chapter

8. Cystic Fibrosis - To assure a cure and improve patients' quality of life through this chronic genetic & life-threatening disease affecting the lungs & digestive system

9. Rex Foundation - Founded by the Grateful Dead to support community social services along with creative efforts in the arts & sciences along with education

10. The Bridge School - Made prominent by Neil Young's fundraising concerts, this school in the Bay Area of CA works to provide alternative communication training and to transition severly speech & physically impaired children back into their communities

11. The Hole In The Wall Gang - Paul Newman founded the world's largest family of camps serving children with serious illnesses - for children too sick to travel to a camp, the "Camp-In-A-Suitcase" program brings the camp to them

12. Toys for Tots - The Marines have been giving out Christmas presents to needy children nationwide since 1948

13. Three Cups of Tea - National Best Selling book raises awareness and the organization works to promote peace and community education, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan & Afghanistan

    I donate to two of these annually, but many of the others were new to me. Great list!

    I once bought a goat for someone. I forget the charity that does that. They have a catalog. I checked out the Three Cups of Tea. That one drew me.

    Have not read Water for Elephants. When I was a girl I saw The Greatest Show on Earth and it was WAY over my head.
