ON BOOKS ~ The Handmaid's Tale (again)...

MizB asks you to:
  • Grab your current read.
  • Let the book fall open to a random page.
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page.
  • Share the title of the book the teaser comes from…that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!
  • Please avoid spoilers!

From pg. 257 of THE HANDMAID'S TALE by Margaret Atwood (fiction - thankfully)...

"Every night when I go to bed I think, In the morning I will wake up in my own house and things will be back the way they were. It hasn't happened this morning, either."

I just finished this book. The method the story was told, and dealt with at the end, made it very haunting in the realism of the possibility. It didn't help that it took place in an area very familiar to me, to a character near my current age with interests I could relate to. The effectiveness was in the relatablility. Highly recommend.

Atwood is high on my list of authors I need to read someday. Soon. As soon as get through the 3,000 books on my TBR shelf. I think it always makes the read more enjoyable when it takes place somewhere you know. Thanks for the recommendation!

From pg. 200 of SWAY by Zachary Lazar...

"Like everyone else now, the journalist was trying to look like Keith. Even the women had the same thin body, the same patched and torn clothes, hair that rose in a slapdash spray that they were always teasing with their fingers."

This was my first Atwood book and I've been a fan ever since.

I don't know anything about the book or author but - it actually sounds a little creepy. While reading I hope you woke up each morning in your own body.

That is a wonderful teaser. It just opens the possibilities right up. Interesting to read your reactions to it, too. I want to read it this year.

Oh, I loved The Handmaid's Tale. It's such a frightening story, but told so wonderfully. I love Atwood's books, but have only read this and Cat's Eye, which I loved too.

I haven't read any of Atwood's books but I know they come highly recommended. This one sounds a bit scary for me, though . . . I still get creeped out by the Wizard of Oz and the wingy monkeys.

Here's my current teaser, from a 1963 nonfiction book called Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat: "My head came slowly over the crest -- and there was my quarry. He was lying down, evidently resting after his mournful singsong, and his nose was about six feet from mine." I'm almost done with this book, and I've really enjoyed it. I'm going to watch the movie next. Happy reading!
