ON MOVIES ~ Copy Cat...

Feature Presentation...

MONDAY MOVIE MEME

Molly looked around for a weekly meme about movies and did not have any luck. So therefore she decided to start her own! Andy will play along as well - hopefully you will too. Leave a link to your blog post where you’ve shared your response or, if you don’t have a blog, share your response in the comment section at the end of this post.

This week's movie topic is all about Best Adaptations...

This weekend we saw a play production of "To Kill A Mockingbird" starring Matthew Modine as Atticus Finch. It was interesting to see another take on Molly's favorite book and movie. Matthew Modine was no Gregory Peck. But it was very true to the book and movie and made us appreciate even more how challenging it can be to live up to pre-existing standards of excellence. That got us to thinking if there were other "To Kill A Mockingbird's" out there. Is the movie ever really BETTER than the book, comic book, musical, play, folk story, or true life story? Our list is short because truthfully there aren't that many movies we have seen where we have also read the book. So please share yours!

  • To Kill A Mockingbird (1962) - Harper Lee novel (1960)
  • The Firm (1993) - John Grisham novel (1991)
  • Mystic River (2003) - Dennis Lehane novel (2001)

I saw Benjamin Button Saturday night...and I heard the book was a tiny little narrow thing and wasn't really all that good. The movie was great, tho!

I just happened to read and review Mockingbird last week. I have never seen the movie and this was my first time reading it!

Sadly I've not seen (or read the book for) any of the movies you picked, although I agree with Janet about Benjamin Button (where I've also not read the original novella).

Anyway, my picks are posted now.

Wow, there are so many to choose from! I know I've missed something critical, but I do my best at 5:00 in the morning! Here are mine:

It's hard to think on a Monday morning!

I have read "To Kill a Mockingbird" a few times and never seen the movie. I should remedy that soon.

Well, here are a few that I can recall reading and watching the movie . . .

    1) The Color Purple by Alice Walker (1982). The movie version came out in 1985 and I actually did enjoy it better than the book (smile).

    2) One Who Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesy (1962). The movie version, 1975.

    3) The Shining by Stephen King
    (1977) The movie, 1980.

Nice topic, by the way. I'm sure I've read and seen a few others. If I think of them, I'll post them on my blog at some point(smile).

Matthew Modine as Atticus? I'd have to see that to appreciate it.

I agree with your list. The Firm came to my mind first as well as Runaway Jury- another John Grisham book/movie. I loved Secret Life of Bees - both book and movie.

    Good topic.
