ON MOVIES ~ Say What?...

Feature Presentation...

MONDAY MOVIE MEME

Molly looked around for a weekly meme about movies and did not have any luck. So therefore she decided to start her own! Andy will play along as well - hopefully you will too. Go to your blog and create your own post on the topic, linking back to us in your post, then come back and leave a link to your post here in our Comments section. If you don’t have a blog, just share your response in the Comments section.

This week's movie topic is all about Subtitles...

Carleen @ Life, Liberty & Good Coffee recently suggested the topic of subtitles. We aim to please here at the Monday Movie Meme so here you go Carleen! We don't watch a lot of foreign films. Part of the reason is that Molly grew up with a Dad who liked to read the words on the screen out loud which got old really fast. But the bigger reason is that it takes a while to adjust to skimming the words while trying not to miss out on any of the images - so maybe having Dad narrate wasn't such a bad idea after all. It makes watching movies feel like work sometimes, but of the few we have seen, they have been worth the effort. Share some of the subtitles worth reading on your blog and link back here at The Bumbles. And don't forget to visit your fellow participants!

  • Volver (Spain - 2006) - Penelope Cruz is very talented when left to her native language
  • Life Is Beautiful (Italy - 1997) - Roberto Benigni is a joy to watch, though the theme is not
  • Diabolique (France - 1955) - Super duper creepy horror, no real need for words
  • Trainspotting (UK - 1996) - OK, techncally this didn't have subtitles, but it sure as hell would have made it a lot easier to understand what those Scots were saying

  • Do you have a topic to suggest to the Monday Movie Meme? Leave it in the Comments section or send us an e-mail.

    I love this week's meme!
Subtitles my favorite. I chose the most watchable and DO NOT MISS movies out there with subtitles.
Here are the biggest two you are the least likely to know - Shall we Dance - THE JAPANESE VERSION!!! A must see must see! and Moliere - about the French writer. It is very fun and funny.
Check out the rest of my recommendations here http://ritbs.blogspot.com

Also there is a really funny video of my friend's wedding I just posted. They practiced for 4 mon. on their wedding dance- dips and lifts and all!

This week's meme was really fun! I had not thought about some of those movies in quite some time. I really enjoyed your list as well! I totally agree about Trainspotting... :(

I have not seen those movies other then Trainspotting. Even I struggled a little with some of it and I have grown up around UK accents (having watched many english shows and having British relatives).

Its funny I have always watched foreign films but very few ever really stuck in my head.

    My picks are here.

    Have a great week!

Ha. Well, one of my favorite subtitle moments was courtesy of closed captioning, which I had left on one night, not realizing I had the option to turn it off. I don't even remember the movie, just the moment when the closed captionioner must have gotten really tired and the words started to make no sense. And then there was a long string of aiaiaiaiaiaiaiaiai... my sister and I still laugh at that.

As for real subtitles, the Japanese Samurai movies are priceless.

I'm so thrilled to see that I'm not in such a small minority of foreign film enthusiasts as I thought I was! Woot!

    Here's my list:

I have a hard time with subtitles. And going to the movie theater gets too expensive for a college kid. We just signed up for NetFlix, though, so I'm getting my fill of good flicks. Thanks for dropping by. Love sharing my shots, and looking at those others take as well. Please come back to see me sometime!

Hey Bumbles.....sorry but I'm a sucker for subtitles. Actually, I don't even read the words I just love listening to the language. Life is Beautiful is one of my all time fave. My girls(who range from 17-12) have always loved foreign films.

Now would an Irish film such as "The Waking of Ned Devine"--also one of my faves be classified--I mean sometimes subtitles would be grand to understand some of the Irish dilect and sayings.;-)

I'll have to start Monday Meme alongside Monday Mailbox on all three of my review blogs.

Thanks Bumbles...I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next.
