ON MUSIC ~ Chinese Democracy...

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY...

The Music Memoirs asks us to name the Top 5 artists we wish would put out new material soon and why...

1. Peter Gabriel (so he'll create some of his own music again now that he's explored the World Music scene)

2. Pearl Jam (so we can feel like we're in our 20's again - surely Eddie Vedder is done stumping for the Dem's by now)

3. Jane's Addiction (now that they're touring again maybe a new album will follow?)

4. Queens of the Stone Age (haven’t seen an album from them in 2 or 3 years and all their previous ones were good)

5. Cake (such a fun, quirky group - they're actually due to have a new album out this summer)

ON MUSIC ~ Groove Is In The Heart...

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY...

The Music Memoirs asks us to name the Top 5 reasons we need music in our life...

1. Makes driving tolerable - have you ever tried to drive without a working radio/CD player? Don't.

2. Pumps you UP - would any team ever win a game without stadium rock pumping through the speakers at high velocity?

3. Spurs on laughter - what else would motivate Uncle Joe to dance so hysterically without a bad '80's wedding playlist? Well, other than alcohol.

4. Encourages love - it moves us, OK? Sappy love songs, stirring classical strings, moving lyrics - they get our minds and hearts in touch with ourselves.

5. Creates bliss - the pure joy of making our ears smile while turning the strangers next to us into people we can bond with over groovin' tunes is what life is all about!

ON MUSIC ~ Make It Stop...

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY...

The Music Memoirs asks us to name our Top 5 songs we wish we'd never heard - and why...

1. "Who Let The Dogs Out" by Baja Men - ruining weddings and other parties one whoop at a time

2. "Give me back that filet o' fish" - annoying McDonald's commercial jingle, but effective

3. "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond - the one negative of Fenway Park, played every game during the 8th inning. Incites drunken singalongs - Bah, Bah, Bah... (This selection under protest by Molly who enjoys drunken singalongs especially at Fenway)

4. "Kokomo" by The Beach Boys - just a really bad song from a really bad movie

5. "Down on the Corner" by Creedence Clearwater Revival - annoying because of it's relentless catchy ditty played ad nauseam on classic rock radio - with a goofy video to boot (This selection under protest by Andy who is a slave to classic rock)

We apologize for getting any or all of these stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

ON MUSIC ~ Friday the 13th...

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY...

The Music Memoirs asks us to name the Top 5 songs that horrify us (interpret as we see fit). Andy is flying solo on this one today...

1. & 2. "Gimme Shelter" & "Midnight Rambler," both off Let if Bleed. Not that they horrify me because they are bad songs (because they are great), but because they are filled with dark and violent imagery (murder & rape) and are very closely associated with the tragedy at Altamont and the end of the 60s and the Woodstock peace & love nation.
Trivia - what song were they playing when Meredith Hunter was murdered at Altamont?

3. Anything by Kenny G - no explanation needed. Pretty much understood by anybody who likes "good" music.

4. Anything by Limp Bizkit - It horrifies me that they got a record contract, they suck so bad. The only reason I thought of this is because I read recently that they were reuniting and touring again. Who asked them to do this?

5. "Tubular Bells" - Michael Oldfield. Others will probably have this as it is the theme song for the Excorcist. Very spooky.

Trivia answer = "Under My Thumb"

ON MUSIC ~ Video Killed The Radio Star...

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY...

The Music Memoirs asks us to name the best music video's from the '80's...

  1. "Sledgehammer" - Peter Gabriel
  2. "Hot For Teacher" - Van Halen
  3. "Take On Me" - a-ha
  4. "Walk This Way" - Aerosmith & Run DMC
  5. "We're Not Gonna Take It" & "I Wanna Rock" - Twisted Sister (we know - sneaking in a double shot here - but Molly chose one and Andy preferred the other)

We decided to leave off "Money for Nothing" with the assumption that it would appear on everyone else's list.

The Music Memoirs asks us to name the ways that music can warm us up...

  1. Pop in a little Barry White...need we say more?

ON MUSIC ~ Dinnertime...

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY...

The Music Memoirs asks us to name our Top 5 Artists/Musicians we would like to have dinner with, and explain why. Here are Andy's solo responses - Molly decided to skip dinner:

  1. Paul McCartney - The stories he could tell, the people that he met and played with.

  2. Mick Jagger - Keith is the one you want to party with, Mick is the one you want to have dinner with.

  3. Neil Young - My favorite solo artist and one of the best songwriters ever. So many different styles over the years but it always comes back to acoustic & Crazy Horse.

  4. John Bell - Singer/Guitar and songwriter for one of my favorite bands, Widespread Panic.

  5. Bruce Springsteen - As long as we only talk music and not politics.

ON MUSIC ~ Party On Garth...

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY...

The Music Memoirs asks us to name our Top 5 Artists/Musicians we would like to party/get drunk with, and explain why:

  1. Keith Richards - to find out how he stays alive after living so hard

  2. Willie Nelson - because he certainly has the good stuff

  3. Kid Rock - he is a magnet for hot chicks (Molly just kicked Andy)

  4. Snoop Dog - because he is #2 & #3 rolled (pun intended) into one

  5. We have a debate for #5 since we are too hungover from our own New Year's Eve celebrations to use futher brain cells on finding common ground:
  • Andy suggests having a pint of Guinness with Bono (Molly thinks it is not worth listening to hours of save the world talk)
  • Molly suggests Justin Timberlake simply because he might invite Andy Samberg along to do a rendition of "D*** In A Box" (plus Andy - not Samberg, OUR Andy - would have plenty of pretty girls to ogle with JT around - everyone's happy!)

      HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

    3. "Strange Overtones" - from Everything That Happens Will Happen Today by David Byrne & Brian Eno

    ON MUSIC ~ Purchase Treats...

    TOP 5 ON FRIDAY...

The Music Memoirs (celebrating their 200th Top 5!) asks us to name our Top 5 reasons we splurge on a piece of music. Since Andy is the primary music buyer he will go solo on this list...

    1. The new Neil Young Archive vol. 1, 10 dvd set. And that only covers the early part of his career. It's about $400.

    2. Tickets to the Phish comeback shows in March.

    3. Upgrading home audio/video equipment

    4. Artwork - concert posters

    5. Attending most concerts, considering the cost of fees - a $25 ticket is $50. Add a few beers, parking, etc. and it's easily over $100.
