Edition #7 Thirteen Things about THE BUMBLES - and where Molly comes up with all those books on her ever-growing reading list... 1. GoodReads - An awesome online community for voracious readers to discuss, keep track of, review and refer books of all kinds 2. Amazon - Their automatic recommendations and "other customers liked" based on your book purchases or browsing history lead you from one to another to another to another - like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon 3. Librarian's Choice Shelf - Our library has a great section of shelves filled with all kinds of suggestions from the librarians 4. Oprah's Book Club - Oprah catches a lot of crap out there but I give her nothing but credit for creating her Book Club and introducing reading to many people who wouldn't have otherwise and for introducing me to some titles I might not have considered on my own 5. My Mom - Whenever I am stuck for something my mom can always rattle off a good 5 or 10 titles for me to check out. If she hasn't been happy with anything from her own shelves lately she'll pull a few from Dad's. His aren't usually my taste though. Mom always gets it right. 6. Our Friends - I always peek at our friends' book jackets to see what world they are following through reading. Some belong to book clubs and others just make their own way. 7. Book Clubs - I don't belong to any "face-to-face" (or REAL LIFE as I call them) book clubs. But I have just started joining a few on GoodReads and am curious to see how I like it. Even if I don't turn out to be active in the discussions at least the reading lists will boost my to read pile. 8. Book Stores - I usually only go into actual book stores, like Barnes & Noble, at Christmas time to buy gifts (I always try to pick up books for all the nieces & nephews at a minimum) because I don't want to go broke buying up all of the intriguing books laid out begging me to take them home. I write down the titles instead of buying on the spot. 9. Newspaper Reviews - I read the Boston Globe online but now and then I do enjoy spending an afternoon with the Sunday Globe in hardcopy splayed out on the family room floor and sometimes I come across some interesting book reviews. 10. Movies - I am as interested in watching movies as I am in reading books. It seems that no one writes original screenplays anymore (which is disappointing) but that means that more often than not the movie is based on some pre-existing piece of literature that I can check out. If I liked the movie we all know that the book can only be better. 11. Talk Radio - I generally listen to Sports Talk Radio all day at work or in the car and that is where I often hear about all the sports related books just waiting to be read (after all, most of the radio personalities are sports writers!). More "grown-up" talk radio such as NPR is a great resource as well. 12. Classics - Every year I try to go back and either re-read a book from the "classic" genre that I read when I was much too young or too busy to appreciate the first go 'round or pick up one that I cannot believe I haven't read yet. It makes me feel smart ;-) 13. YOU! - Hopefully YOU will be kind enough to leave a few must-read recommendations so I can continue to grow my list of books to read. What else exactly would be the point to this little exercise!
