Andy recently had a hankering for some warm comfort food that wasn't chili. So he consulted his favorite cookbook: Dad's Own Cookbook and found this gem of a meal that we gave two thumbs up since our mouths were full. INGREDIENTS: - 1 cup Cornmeal
- 1 1/4 pounds Boneless Chicken Thighs, cut into 2" pieces
- 2 tablespoons Corn Oil
- 1/4 pound Chorizo or Hot Italian Sausage, cut into 1/2" slices
- 1 Green Bell Pepper, seeded and sliced into 1/2" strips
- 1 Red Bell Pepper, seeded and sliced into 1/2" strips
- 1 Large Onion, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves Garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup Red Wine
- 1 cup canned or homemade Chicken Stock or 2 Bouillon Cubes dissolved in 1 cup boiling water
- 1 28 ounce can Whole Tomatoes, drained
- 1 package Chili Seasoning
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh Coriander (Cilantro) or 1 teaspoon dried
EQUIPMENT: - Large frying pan with cover
- 2 medium bowls
- Large platter or baking sheet
STEPS: - Measure the cornmeal into a medium bowl. Add the chicken pieces and toss them in the cornmeal with your hands. Shake off the excess cornmeal and place the chicken pieces on a large platter or baking sheet.
- Place a frying pan on high heat and let it get very hot, about 1 minute. Add 1 tablespoon oil and all the sausage, the bell peppers, and onion and saute until the sausage is cooked through, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and saute for 1 minute more. Transfer the vegetables and sausage to a medium bowl.
- Add 1 tablespoon oil to the frying pan and let it get hot, about 30 seconds. Add the chicken pieces and brown, turning so they cook on all sides, about 6 minutes.
- Return the sausage and pepper mixture to the frying pan. Add the wine and cook until the liquid is reduced by half. Add the chicken stock or dissolved bouillon, tomatoes, chili seasoning, and coriander, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 45 minutes.
- Serve hot over brown rice with cornbread.
Since the mixture was a bit soupy Andy just mixed it right in with the rice and thinks that next time around he might add some black beans. And sadly we did not have any sweet cornbread but that would make things even more delicious!

From pg. 52 of THE HANDMAID'S TALE by Margaret Atwood (fiction - thankfully)... "It's also a story I'm telling, in my head, as I go along. Tell, rather than write, because I have nothing to write with and writing is in any case forbidden." I have just begun this book and am already sucked in by fear of the possibility.
 Feature Presentation... MONDAY MOVIE MEME
Molly looked around for a weekly meme about movies and did not have any luck. So therefore she decided to start her own! Andy will play along as well - hopefully you will too. This week's movie topic is all about Cameos... While watching the Daytona 500, aka "America's Race", this weekend we couldn't get images of Talladega Nights out of our brain since the Fox broadcasting crew had cameos in the movie. That got us to thinking about other movies with cameos that were entertaining. Here are some memorable cameos we enjoy - which ones are on your list? Aretha Franklin - The Blues Brothers (1980)Kareem Abdul-Jabbar & Barbara Billingsley - Airplane! (1980)Bob Uecker - Major League (1989)Quentin Tarantino - Pulp Fiction (1994)Bob Barker - Happy Gilmore (1996)
Sandy @ You've GOTTA Read This! has passed along this little award with a big heart. It is meant to be passed along to those you consider friends in the blogging community (although why would you pass along an award to someone you didn't like?) and we have certainly found our share of friends in our short time amongst you. The award's mission statement goes a little something like this: "This is for blogs that are exceedingly charming and who aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers. Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award." Well, if you know anything about us by now, it is that we are too lazy to pass awards along to all that many people. Plus, we feel the impact is greater if we highlight just one. And no wisecracks that we don't have enough friends to list more than just one - wiseguy. So without further ado on this Valentine's Day, we shall now pass along this award to:
We know that she is a bit bogged down of late and won't be offended in the least if she doesn't have time to post about this award and pass it along to others. In fact, this lovely blogger goes out of her way to introduce us to all kinds of friends every week through her "Meet My Friends Monday" posts as it is which is why this award is perfect for her to hang on her blog. Go visit Toni and we promise she will introduce you to more friends without asking for a thing in return.
GYM RATS - #9“Keep smiling, keep shining Knowing you can always count on me, for sure That's what friends are for In good times, in bad times I'll be on your side forever more That's what friends are for” ~Dionne Warwick & Friends
When we joined the gym the point was to lose weight and improve our health. That’s it. Show up, work out, come home.
However, there are two basic types of members. Those like us who are mainly there for business and those like Chatty Kathy Guy who are there for a little pleasure as well. Chatty Kathy Guy used to have a work out buddy whose ear he would talk off the entire time. Maybe that’s why his buddy stopped coming to the gym. So now poor Chatty Kathy Guy roams the gym looking for other ears to bend.
Don’t get me wrong, Chatty Kathy Guy is really nice. He is a salesman so he has that outgoing personality and friendly demeanor. He is happiest when some of his gym buddies are there to talk to in between sets on the weights. I feel bad for him when none of his friends are around - he looks like a sad puppy dog. But if you fall for that look then you risk being sidetracked for a while as he chats away. He’s always eager to make friends, be it on the treadmill, weights or just wandering around.
There is another chatterbox who gives Chatty Kathy Guy a run for his money. The original Stairmaster Man doesn’t do any talking - just sweating. But Stairmaster Man II will go on and on and on and on about sports to any of the guys that wander within range of his Stairmaster. I don’t know how he can hold a conversation on that thing but he never tires of a good discussion.
For the ladies, classes seem to the best method for meeting friends since talk about the class is a built in conversation starter. Guys don’t generally seem to take classes but I do admire the brave few who do. They risk being laughed at by their macho buddies but they have plenty of opportunity to mingle with the babes.
But if you have all the friends you want you can just pop in your earbuds and tune out the world and get in an uninterrupted workout. Maybe if I spent more time talking to the Gym Rats around me I wouldn’t have to refer to them as Chatty Kathy Guy and Stairmaster Man II. But where would the fun be in that?

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY... The Music Memoirs asks us to name the Top 5 songs that horrify us (interpret as we see fit). Andy is flying solo on this one today... 1. & 2. "Gimme Shelter" & "Midnight Rambler," both off Let if Bleed. Not that they horrify me because they are bad songs (because they are great), but because they are filled with dark and violent imagery (murder & rape) and are very closely associated with the tragedy at Altamont and the end of the 60s and the Woodstock peace & love nation. Trivia - what song were they playing when Meredith Hunter was murdered at Altamont?
3. Anything by Kenny G - no explanation needed. Pretty much understood by anybody who likes "good" music.
4. Anything by Limp Bizkit - It horrifies me that they got a record contract, they suck so bad. The only reason I thought of this is because I read recently that they were reuniting and touring again. Who asked them to do this?
5. "Tubular Bells" - Michael Oldfield. Others will probably have this as it is the theme song for the Excorcist. Very spooky.
Trivia answer = "Under My Thumb"

Edition #16 Thirteen Things about THE BUMBLES -and one of our favorite college traditions...
What - you've never heard of The Beanpot? You must not have spent any time in Boston. Here's a brief overview for you:
1. The Beanpot is a college hockey tournament held in two rounds over the first two Mondays each February between Boston College, Boston University, Harvard University and Northeastern University.
2. The Beanpot just crowned it's 57th champion and is played in the Boston Garden - home of the NHL Bruins and NBA Celtics.
3. The tournament was originally created as a "filler" to sell tickets on slow nights just after Christmas. Six years later it was moved to February after gaining popularity.
4. The February timing falls right after the Super Bowl and before Spring Training, near the middle of the NHL and NBA seasons. This means that there is not a lot of professional competition with The Beanpot. It is also a tune-up to the NCAA hockey regional tournament and Frozen Four championship.
5. The quality of play is very high as well. These aren't crummy hockey players. Three of the 4 teams have won the national championship within the last 20 years. This year's Beanpot final round had the #1 and #3 teams in the nation matched up against each other.
6. It is always the same 4 teams. And they are geographically located within mere miles of each other. B.C. and B.U. share the same line of the T (public trolley subway) with Northeastern branching off the same T line and Harvard a different line across the river. There is no seeding in the tournament - the schedule of matchups is rotated from year to year to keep things fair.
7. The Beanpot is a major recruiting tool for all 4 colleges involved. It is broadcast on NESN, which is owned by the Red Sox and Boston Bruins, throughout all of New England.
8. The Blizzard of '78 hit during the first round of The Beanpot and left many stranded in the Garden for several days. That year the final round wasn't played until March due to the time it took to clear out all that snow. B.U. beat Harvard for the championship.
9. People have joked that The Beanpot should be called the B.U. Invitational because B.U. has won half of them - 29 out of 57 overall - and appeared in 46 of the 57 final rounds. In the last 25 years B.U. has missed the finals only twice and they won 17 of those 23 finals appearances. B.C. won 4 of them, Harvard and Northeastern 2 a piece.
10. Current NHL alumni of The Beanpot include Brian Gionta (NJ Devils), Tom Poti (WA Nationals), Chris Drury (NY Rangers), and Rick DiPietro (NY Islanders). Perhaps the most well known Beanpot alumn is Mike Eruzioni, who scored the winning goal against the Soviets as Captain of the U.S. Hockey Team in the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid.
12. Ted Donato is a Harvard and Beanpot alumn, a former NHL player, and has been Harvard's coach for the last 3 years. Greg Cronin has been coaching Northeastern for 3 years and comes from a family line of Beanpot almumni, though being a graduate of Colby he is not one himself. Jerry York, a B.C. and Beanpot alumn, has been coaching B.C. for 14 years and has the 2nd most wins in NCAA Hockey history between B.C. and Bowling Green. Jack Parker is a B.U. and Beanpot alumn, is in the Beanpot H.O.F., has coached B.U. for 35 years and ranks 3rd behind York for coaching victories.
13. Molly is a B.U. alumn. She was wicked psyched to see B.U. beat Northeastern this week for the Beanpot trophy. Look for a Beanpot presence in the NCAA Hockey Regionals in late March and the Frozen Four April 9th - 11th. Sandy at You've GOTTA Read This! wants to know 6 things that make us happy. Only six? Getting, being and staying happy are our life goals! To help narrow it down we've come up with 6 categories to put all of those happy things into. Here's what came to mind for us at this particular point in time - who knows when we'll get fickle and go in search of something new: 1. PERSON = Other people's kids - We don't have any of our own but love to be around the children in our life that belong to our family, friends and neighbors. Hopefully they consider us the fun Aunt & Uncle.2. PLACE = Road Trips - Planning and taking trips are exciting. If we are driving to our destination we always take the scenic route. If we are taking other transportation to get there, we try to rent a vehicle upon arrival to take a cruise and explore. Hanging out with the locals and finding out their favorite spots is much more fun than checking things off the standard tourist list.3. THING = Our fireplace - We had to move out of our house for 6 months when our addition was being built. The fireplace took shape early on during construction and for a long time was the only part of the house that was complete - just sitting there teasing us. So the very first thing we did when we were finally able to move back into our home was to celebrate with a big roaring fire in that fireplace that had been waiting patiently for us. It continues to create happy memories.4. ANIMAL = Pets - Unconditional love is the greatest source of happiness. We are too lazy to have dogs and we both grew up with cats so we have kitties of our own. They are cute, soft, friendly, psychotic little furballs that make us laugh when they do their Fred Flintsone imitations scurrying around corners, crash into walls at full speed, and roll around on their backs begging for some string. We weren't too happy though when they knocked over the Christmas tree. That's why Andy sometimes prefers his pet fish (also a favorite of the cats).5. FOOD = Pistachios for Andy, Peanut Butter for Molly - We are a little nutty. Sometimes the greatest gift you can give Andy is a bag of pistachios. And Molly always looks forward to a handful of Reese's mini peanut butter cups at the end of a long day. The little things create the biggest joy.6. ACTIVITES = Concerts, Bar Trivia & Anything Sports Related - watching, playing, real, fantasy and even some friendly wagers ;0) - This is how we let loose, relax, and have fun. The happy trifecta here would be to go to a local bar with some live music in the background while we work our brain power playing trivia with the game on the big screen. Now we are supposed to pass this along to 6 other people. But what would make us more happy (which is the goal here) would be to just introduce you to a new blogging friend of ours so that is what we are going to do. Hopefully one of the things that makes him happy is being tagged by a meme!!! Go visit An Eerie Tapestry - that alone will make you happy.

From pg. 104 of DEWEY: THE SMALL-TOWN LIBRARY CAT WHO TOUCHED THE WORLD by Vicki Myron with Bret Witter (non-fiction)... "Half the time I immediately spotted the back half of a long-haired orange cat. For Dewey, hiding meant sticking your head in a bookshelf; he seemed to forget he had a tail." I have had cats for pets since I was 6 years old. So I am a sucker for cute kitties. Have you seen the cover of this book? How could I turn away from that face? This was a super speedy read since most of the material was "fluffy" but there are meatier subjects about the author's life, the culture of Iowa and Dewey's effect on it all. Sweet memories that provide more chuckles than tears.

This week's movie topic is all about Movie Quotes... We have a habit of using movie-speak. You know, randomly inserting lines from movies into conversation when they seem to fit? It is highly entertaining to the two of us but if someone else isn't familiar with the movie the quote comes from, we sound a bit more idiotic than normal. But what better way to expose people to awesome movies? Here are some lines we love to quote...can you guess what movies they come from? Do you quote movies too? Then by all means, quote away! 1. "What we have here is...a failure to communicate." (Cool Hand Luke) 2. "Very niii-ce." (Borat) 3. "It'd be a whole lot cooler if you did." (Dazed and Confused) 4. "Stay away from the cans!" (The Jerk) 5. "Circle of Trust." (Meet the Parents) 6. "I coulda been a contender." (On the Waterfront) 7. "Hey bud, what's your problem?" (Fast Times) 8. "You can't fight in here - this is the war room!" (Dr. Strangelove) 9. "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" (Animal House) 10. "You can't handle the truth!" (A Few Good Men)
GYM RATS - #8When I was a little girl my shoelace got stuck in the escalator as we reached the top and were attempting to get off. I’m not sure you can appreciate just how terrifying it is to think that the magic staircase has decided to keep you around for a while longer by sucking you in by your shoe in order to gobble up your leg and beyond.
Thankfully my cousin was “quick on her feet” and yanked me out of my shoe to remove me from the horror. In order for the maintenance guy to cut my shoelace free and return my shoe he had to shut down the escalator, resulting in a bunch of pissed off people who had to climb the rest of the way up. I wonder if that’s where they got the idea for the Stairmaster?
The rotating stairs of the Stairmaster in our gym always give me flashbacks to the escalator incident and so I avoid it like the plague. It has nothing to do with the fact that it seems like an awful lot of work, I swear.
Even if I wanted to overcome my fears and master the Stairmaster I would have to wait my turn because Stairmaster Man is always on that beast. Once he gets on it he just keeps climbing and climbing. I don’t think anyone told him that those stairs don’t actually go anywhere.
Stairmaster Man also sweats more profusely than any other human being on Earth. Because of this, the Stairmaster gets a little slippery. It also stinks to high heaven when you walk anywhere near it.
You see, in addition to not knowing that the Stairmaster doesn’t really have a destination, Stairmaster Man also apparently does not know where the paper towels and cleaning solution squirt bottles are located. After working out on that thing for hours at a time, he climbs down, wipes his brow, and moseys on into the locker room.
Icckkk! I did have to laugh once though when someone came along after him to use the machine and looked up for the leak in the ceiling that surely must have caused all that water puddled up on everything. Thankfully they moved along to something else instead.
Maybe it is his way of ensuring the Stairmaster will always be available to him. Just like placing a wad of gum on the seat cushion in front of you ensures a clear view of the movie. Disgusting but effective. Click here for previous editions of Gym Rats and tell us who you want to hear about next!

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY... The Music Memoirs asks us to name the best music video's from the '80's... - "Sledgehammer" - Peter Gabriel
- "Hot For Teacher" - Van Halen
- "Take On Me" - a-ha
- "Walk This Way" - Aerosmith & Run DMC
- "We're Not Gonna Take It" & "I Wanna Rock" - Twisted Sister (we know - sneaking in a double shot here - but Molly chose one and Andy preferred the other)
We decided to leave off "Money for Nothing" with the assumption that it would appear on everyone else's list.

Thirteen Things about THE BUMBLES -and a selection of our favorite souvenirs...
Most people keep china in their dining room hutch.
We keep Molly's collection of shot glasses in there.

Molly collects shot glasses as a memento of all the places she's been. She's not really sure when all of this started since she doesn't actually do shots, but as friends and family saw her growing collection they started bringing back souvenirs for her too. Andy is just happy he didn't have to build the hutch to display them all. Here are a sampling of some of our favorite ones:
#1. Yes - this is from the Vatican. When Molly's folks went on vacation through Europe the only thing Molly asked them to bring back was a shot glass with the Pope on it. Molly's Mom looked everywhere for one but this was the closest she could find.
#2. Andy had a business trip to Minnesota not long after Jesse Ventura took office as Governor so he picked up this gem for political posterity's sake.
#3. Andy brought this one home for Molly from Baltimore where he had been working for several months on business. It was probably Andy's interpretation of Molly's mood while living through that long distance nightmare. It is an accurate representation of that time.
#4. The boyfriend of one of Molly's former co-workers used to travel to Kansas for business trips all the time. He brought back the whole collection of the Wizard of Oz characters one at a time - but this is the best one.
#5. Molly's boss brought this back from one of the many conference reward trips he has taken over the years as a salesman. This is one of the prettiest in our collection. We can only assume Finland is as beautiful in person. Molly never gets to go on these trips herself so lives vicariously through the shot glasses.
#6. While the shot glasses from Europe are generally much smaller than the average U.S. shot glass, shot glasses from Indiana are obviously not. When Molly's brother and his now wife were driving cross country to San Francisco they picked this one up because it was just plain ridiculous. Now it is a prized possession.
#7. Here is one that we actually bought ourselves. This was from our Honeymoon in Kauai, Maui & Oahu and reminds us of the fun, laid back adventures we had for those heavenly few weeks in one of the prettiest spots you could ever hope to see.
#8. This is not one of the prettiest places you could ever hope to see but the food was yummy despite the implication. Molly bought this herself while out and about with a friend in the White Mountain region of New Hampshire while everyone else was skiing.
#9. This one came from a Florida vacation with Molly's family. Lots of time was spent shelling on the sandy ocean beaches so the shot glass selection is very appropriate. Sanibel is a beautiful little spot - just be prepared to stay for a while since the toll for the bridge to get there is highway robbery.
#10. Molly's brother and his wife gave us this neat one of the NYC subway map for Christmas which they bought, appropriately enough, from a kiosk in a subway station. Our sister-in-law is from NYC and thought this was more useful than a shot glass with a picture of the Statue of Liberty.
#11. Molly's family is from North Carolina, just like Andy Griffith, so her folks picked this one up to represent her roots on a recent visit back for a wedding which happened to take place in Andy Griffith's hometown. Makes you want to whistle, doesn't it?
#12. When Molly lived in Cleveland as a little girl the Rock & Roll HOF didn't exist. If it had, maybe she would have stayed longer. Instead, our friends took a vacation to Cleveland to see the R&R HOF and ride some roller coasters at Cedar Point. They brought us back this shot glass from the R&R HOF which has an image of the insert you used to have to put in your 45's to get them to fit on your record player.
#13. You didn't think we would do this without a shout out to the Red Sox did you? Don't hate us because we're beautiful - the first championship is always the sweetest. So we bought this to commemorate that celebration and hope to use it again this year.

Since I finished this book over the weekend I thought I would complete my selection of Teasers by showing you how it all began. From the epigraph quote and opening line of ANNA KARENINA by Leo Tolstoy (fiction)... "Vengeance is mine; I will repay." "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." I enjoyed this book despite understanding fully the impact it has had on literature. The character development and portrayal of mundane everyday life is what I admire most. I got lost a bit with interruptions of social and political commentary through the characters from a time I am not familiar with.
raidergirl3 asks - It's Tuesday, where is reading taking you?
I am ensconced in catnip by the caring ladies who saved me from that frigid drop box and welcomed me into this friendly library in the middle of America's heartland. (Dewey: The Small Town Library Cat Who Touched The World - V. Myron w/B. Witter, non-fiction)

This week's movie topic is all about The Chase... Recently we found ourselves watching The Da Vinci Code (Tom Hanks' bad hair and all) on T.V. As we lamented the fact that there weren't any better viewing choices, along came a little car chase scene that we had forgotten about when we originally saw the film in the theater. Don't believe us? The French chick drives herself and Tom Hanks in a little euro car in reverse through the streets of Paris during a high speed chase and barely misses being squished by converging garbage trucks. A great car chase scene can define a movie, and sometimes even save a bad one. Neither was the case with The Da Vinci Code, but at least it gave us this week's topic. Here are some movies with our favorite chase scenes...what are yours?
