ON FUN ~ Rocky...

GYM RATS - #7

“Yo Adrian!”
~Rocky Balboa - Rocky (1976)

I was working out a few months ago, minding my own business, when all of a sudden a new gym rat arrived - loudly. He was a short guy, with dark hair that he wore long and slicked back. He was wearing jeans with a big shiny belt buckle to match his thick gold chain around his neck and a tank top as he strutted by like George Jefferson. I thought perhaps he was taking a tour of the facility.

But lo and behold he plopped himself down quite jarringly at one of the weight machines and began to pump some serious iron. He lifted a whole stack about five times with loud grunts, all the while trying to make things look effortless.

Although distracted by the shaking of the floor when the stack of weights slammed down, it was hard to miss him pop out of his seat and stalk over to the full length wall mirrors, preen his hair ever so briefly, and then shadow box with his reflection, grunting “pow pow pow” in staccato before abruptly spinning around and pacing through the gym like a menace on a mission between reps.

When Rocky first arrived, everyone was startled. No longer could we hear the crappy music videos on a permanent loop what with his boxing grunts, slamming weights and completely random noises that he made while stalking around with his headphones. But as his routine became more routine to us all he started to make a few friends. Some of the other guys, probably out of pure curiosity, started up conversations. His strange noises simmered down a little and his tightly wound antics seemed to loosen up a bit. But he still stalks around between machines and every now and then I catch him boxing himself in the mirror. I wonder if he has the theme from Rocky playing over and over on his iPod to pump him up or perhaps some speed metal?

Yet the other week as I was leaving I came across Rocky arriving in his Honda with an oxford shirt and hair parted down the middle. He looked like a slightly geeky shy guy who was perfectly normal. So now I know that the gym is where he goes to let loose and be the antithesis of all that. As Stallone said, Rocky was all about pride, reputation and not being just another bum from the neighborhood. But I still question his choice to work out in jeans and chains - even Adrian could tell that’s not a good look.

ON FUN ~ Right This Way...

Edition #14

Thirteen Things about THE BUMBLES -

and a tour of our blog since most of us never go beyond the post we've come to read...

1. Our Header & Background - Yes we know, it is very lame and blah. We're not techies here or anything ya know! Seriously, this is what Blogger gave us to work with and we're just too lazy and cheap to go looking for better options elsewhere. So we try to make up for it by making the posts themselves visually attractive and interesting.

2. As CCR should have sung, "There's A Sidebar on the Right." - Jackpot! A wealth of information - all you need to know really - can be found on our Sidebar. Consider it your directory to our blog. Keep reading for a quick overview.

3. Meet The Bumbles - This is the "About Us" section where you get to read what we want to share with you about who we are. Did you ever notice that no one ever shares any bad habits here?

4. Memes We Play - This is where we pimp the weekly events we take part in and a link to where you can go find even more that might be of interest. Here is your guide to what and when we are posting about these things. Love music but hate books? Stop by Fridays and skip Tuesdays.

5. Can't Get Enough Of The Bumbles - This is where anyone electing to Follow our blog shows up. We had no idea one could actually follow a blog until one day Sherry @ Nite Swimming showed up on our Dashboard as a Follower. After we realized this was not the blog equivalent of stalking, but actually a nice thing, we added this little gadget to give props to our groupies.

6. Labels - Here is the archive of all our posts. Saves you the trouble of having to scroll through all the actual posts to find the ones you want. Say you had lots of time on your hands and really wanted to catch up on Gym Rats, this is where you would find them all in one place.

7. What's On Our DVR - Uh, this is pretty self explanatory actually. Just a more exciting way to show you dear readers what quality programming and guilty pleasures we watch. So for example, if you were a Lost addict too you could let us know and we could share theories about the Island and where it went and who's really in charge and what's with the time travel...or not - sorry.

8. Favorite Links - Probably the least popular feature of the Sidebar in general. Does anyone ever really read these links, much less visit them? They're really there more for our convenience. But they do tell a little story about where we go on the web when we're not here. You could always click on one of the radio station links for some sound to accompany your perusing of our blog.

9. Molly's Recent Reads - This little widget (see how we worked in that tech vocabulary?) is really quite neat. It could be a little larger but it shows you shelves of the books Molly has recently read which you can page through and the ratings she has given them. If you are a member of Goodreads (which every bookworm really should be) then you can click here to read Molly's thoughts on these books. But be forewarned - that site is like crack for book junkies.

10. Netflix Queue - Netflix doesn't have any cool widgets (showing off again dropping the tech speak) so this extremely lame visual will have to do. It shows you a small sample of the movie titles we've most recently added to our queue for future viewing. Perhaps it will inspire you to share a review if you've seen one of the ones listed.

11. Favorite Place - If we weren't blogging we'd be here right now. Well - we'd be there between April and October. The rest of the time it is covered in snow so during those months we just stare at this picture and dream of next year.

12. Travelogue - We took an old handwritten list that we've been keeping for years and spent quite a bit of time re-creating it here. This is a list of every place we've been or would like to go. Each listing connects you to a link about the location and how to plan a visit. This is another section that is probably more of interest and use to us, but if you ever find yourself wondering what Machu Picchu is like we've got a link for you.

13. Bloggers Taking The Time To Visit Us - This is our version of the Blog Roll. Anyone who leaves a comment on our blog gets added to this section. This is where we keep track of all of you and go to get a quick glimpse into your blogs and current posts. We love our visitors and this is our launching pad to your world. And that concludes our tour -thank you for coming! If you care to leave a comment, know that you will be listed here and that we will come take a self-guided tour of your blog some day.

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. What do you do? Write Thirteen things about yourself, summarize your week in one entry, make it easy for other bloggers to get to know you on a weekly basis. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is not only encouraged, it is part of being a Thursday Thirteener! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun!

ON FUN ~ Now Featuring Lemonade...

Kristen @ Frugal Antics of a Harried Homemaker and Mo @ Inside Mo's Mind have been very kind to us this week by passing along this lovely "Lemonade Award" to us. This one is particularly sweet since it represents bloggers who show good attitude or gratitude.

Perhaps Kristen & Mo aren't aware of all the poor people we pick on in our Gym Rats posts - hmmmm. In any event, we do try to stay positive over here in the Bumbles world and would like to introduce you to the following blogger who we most admire for turning lemons into lemonade:

If you have never visited Trish over in Australia and read about her life you should go do that now. She epitomizes this award - and she has an awful lot of fun and insightful things to say. Go visit her and her family that she is so proud of.

Technically we think we are supposed to list 10 blogs but we decided to dole it all out to Trish instead. She can pass it along to however many deserving blogs she likes ;0)

ON BOOKS ~ Anna Karenina (again)...

MizB asks you to:
  • Grab your current read.
  • Let the book fall open to a random page.
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page.
  • Share the title of the book the teaser comes from…that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!
  • Please avoid spoilers!

From pg. 451 of ANNA KARENINA by Leo Tolstoy (fiction)...

"For a long time they kept correcting him and were about to give it up - because he kept either taking the wrong hand or taking it with the wrong hand - when he finally understood that he had to take her right hand with his own right hand without changing position. When he finally took the bride by the hand he was supposed to, the priest went a few steps ahead of them and stopped at the lectern."

There are so many more worthy sentences to share from this book, but this particular Teaser reminded me of my own wedding when our preacher dude asked us to join hands and instead Andy stuck his hand straight out to me as if to shake hands - nice to meet you too, honey! We had only known each other for, oh...over 10 years at that point. So Tolstoy's character here has created some nostalgia for me - the more things change the more they stay the same.

ON FUN ~ Amazon Giveaway...

If you would like a chance to win a $100 Amazon Gift Certificate, simply visit Jacqueline @ Miss Musing and leave a post telling her about your favorite book. That's it. Giveaway expires at the end of the day on Friday, 01/30.

ON MOVIES ~ Show Tunes...

Feature Presentation...

MONDAY MOVIE MEME

Molly looked around for a weekly meme about movies and did not have any luck. So therefore she decided to start her own! Andy will play along as well - hopefully you will too. Leave a link to your blog post where you’ve shared your response or, if you don’t have a blog, share your response in the comment section at the end of this post.

This week's movie topic is all about Musicals...

When Molly walked into her office building the other morning, she passed by a construction worker whistling while he worked. More shocking than the fact that he was not whistling in appreciation at Molly, was that he was whistling "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" from My Fair Lady! This just goes to show you never know who might be a fan of the musical. Molly likes them, Andy does not. Apparantly construction guy from Molly's building does. Andy had better watch out. Here are some of Molly's favorites...what are yours?

Random Twilight Zone moment here - guess what movie Molly came across while typing this very post? MY FAIR frickin' LADY!!!! Andy walked in the room and said "Is this My Fair Lady?" Molly fell out of her chair from shock. Maybe Andy likes musicals more than he lets on ;0)

ON FUN ~ Who Needs An Oscar?...

Toni Lee @ Ramblings of an Unstable Mind bestowed this flattering award upon us and we really can't thank her enough - even if she is a Steelers fan.

This is a “meme” award, so it gets passed on to 5 deserving people. Also, for some random reason we are supposed to list 5 things we are addicted to. Now, that's a little personal if you ask us - but since the first step to recovery is admitting your addiction, here goes...

1. Red Sox - did you know pitchers & catchers report in 17 days?!
2. Lost - well, really only Molly is addicted to this show - Andy is too confused to care
3. Good Beer - Andy is a beer snob with Harpoon IPA being his favorite beverage
4. Reading - Molly will read a cereal box if there's nothing else around
5. Tunes - we don't call Andy "Concert Boy" for nothin'

Here are the fellow bloggers we are handing out this "Fabulous" award to (or maybe we just want to know about their secret addictions):

ON FUN ~ Seven Sisters Girl...

GYM RATS - #6

DAVID: “You know how I know you’re gay?”
CAL: “How?”
DAVID: “You like Coldplay.”
~
The 40 Year Old Virgin

As I spend time on the treadmill, bored with my book during a commercial on the program distracting me, I like to check in on the regular gym rats and imagine who they are, based on what I see of them at the gym.

Seven Sisters Girl never uses the weight machines. She only rides the bike and does crunches. I am guessing that she is involved in some very specific serious conditioning of her legs and core. The big duffle bag she stuffs under the counter instead of in a locker also makes me think she is an athlete - soccer maybe?

Although she is a machine with her workouts, she seems to be shy and keeps to herself, hiding behind her glasses, long baggy shorts and a T-shirt with a Seven Sisters logo on the back. The Seven Sisters are a group of private women’s colleges in the Northeast that were originally tied together for their parallel with the Ivy League. These same schools, like many others heavy on the female population, are also often thought to be more than just sisterly.

With no evidence of a wedding band, I imagine that Seven Sisters Girl is single and seeks love from someone who appreciates all that she has to offer - like the rest of us. Her gym routine screams that she would be loyal and attentive. She is young and, based on her T-shirt (the best way to measure a person‘s intelligence), bright. And lets face it - her fitness level certainly indicates that she has plenty of stamina.

But until I can get a peek at her i-pod for evidence of Coldplay, I’m not sure if I should be looking for guys or girls to set her up with.

ON MUSIC ~ Come Again?...

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY...

The Music Memoirs asks us to name unique band/artist names...

  1. Oingo Boingo - of "Weird Science" fame in the '80's from Los Angeles, CA

  2. Space Pussy - Gay, Drag & Transgender rock band huge in Provincetown, RI in the '90's who put on a totally fun show with pretty cool music

  3. Englebert Humperdinck - '60's pop schlop British crooner, aka Arnold Dorsey - yes, surprisingly, he actually chose the name of a late 1800's German Opera composer because it was more "arresting" when he first hit it big in...Germany *shocker*

  4. The String Cheese Incident - Boulder, CO Jam Band from the '90's and into the early '00's with lots of cool bluegrass influences

  5. Leftover Salmon - Another Boulder, CO Jam Band that came before SCI above with a Cajun style

If you would like to do the same, leave a link to your blog post where you’ve shared your Thursday Thoughts or, if you don’t have a blog, share them in the comment section at the end of this post. Or just be a lurker - we don't mind. Some links of others like us still continuing the T13 tradition are here.

ON BOOKS ~ Book Clubs...

Although it seems I have been reading since my tiny fingers could hold those soft little books they give to babies to play with, I have never been a part of a book club or group setting that provided a specific forum for discussing books that I have read and my thoughts about them.

My closest exposure to this was school - which was not usually for the purpose of hearing what I had to say, but to teach me how to say, how to interpret, and sadly even sometimes, how to think.

In more recent years I have had discussions with family members about common reads, but we were never completing the same books at the same time so the details weren't always there.

The few book clubs that neighbors and friends had mentioned seemed to exist more for gossip than books so they did not provide the right setting.

So I went online seeking an alternative and have found several sources. In the past few weeks I have taken part in two different book discussions in two different styles - perhaps old news to you but exciting experiences for me.

The first was hosted by dear Betty at http://bettysbookchats.blogspot.com/ who I have visited through Teaser Tuesdays. I came across a post for her first online book chat about a book I had read several months prior and thought - what the hell - I'll give it a shot and see how it goes.

The second was hosted by a group on Goodreads where I participated in the selection of the book to be read and read it specifically for their discussion.

I found that I much preferred Betty's forum since it allowed for a live real-time chat where those of us participating could have a real conversation. The instant conversation kept thoughts and ideas flowing and the interaction was very enjoyable. I think it also helped that the number of participants was quite small, being the first "meeting." It made things more personal and comfortable and I think that Betty was a terrific host. But I do know that she would welcome more participation so that we could learn from a larger palate of ideas. I plan to go back to participate in some of her future discussions and encourage all others of similar interests to do so as well.

Regarding the Goodreads group discussion, it was conversation via post and my energy and interest level waned very quickly. Although it was nice to have the time to formulate more detailed comments, it seems that some participants were more interested in putting their thoughts out there rather than talking with each other about them. I think this is partly because of the format and the much greater number of members involved. The discussion goes on for days or weeks - at any time you can go back and start it back up again. That is nice since often long after the fact a new thought I wanted to share will pop up.

It is nice every now and then to use a book club to select my next read. However, I have found that if I rely on that too often it places time constraints on me to get it finished in time for the discussion. In that regard it works out well that the Goodreads group makes their selections 6 months in advance so that I can organize my reading schedule without pressure. Otherwise the reading feels more like homework and there I am back in school again. Where I originally longed for discussions to go with the great books I had to read.

ON BOOKS ~ Location = Russia...

raidergirl3 asks - It's Tuesday, where is reading taking you?

I am breathlessly in love with someone other than my husband and trying to figure out how to pull it all off. It seems this business of deceipt is not uncommon in the circles I travel, which are high society in Moscow & Petersburg and jaunts to the country in the summer.

(Anna Karenina - L. Tolstoy, fiction)

ON BOOKS ~ Anna Karenina...

From pg. 61 of ANNA KARENINA by Leo Tolstoy (fiction)...

"In that brief glance Vronsky had time to notice the restrained animation that played over her face and fluttered between her shining eyes and the barely noticeable smile that curved her red lips. It was as if a surplus of something so overflowed her being that it expressed itself beyond her will, now in the brightness of her glance, now in her smile."

And, just to show how relatable this classic novel published in 1877 still is to the present time, I give you a bonus Teaser...

From pg. 134...

"The conversation had begun nicely, but precisely because it was much too nice, it stopped again. They had to resort to that sure, never failing remedy - malicious gossip."

This week's movie topic is all about Spoofs...

What? You were expecting a topic about Presidential movie roles in honor of the Inauguration? Lets leave all the focus on the real world for that one. Here at the Monday Movie Meme our brains are hanging out in the world of parody. Then again, some have said that our exiting President has made a mockery of the office so perhaps we have an appropriate topic after all, hmmm. In any event, here are some of our choices for favorite spoofs...what are yours?

ON BOOKS ~ The Story of Edgar Sawtelle (again)...

MizB asks you to:
  • Grab your current read.
  • Let the book fall open to a random page.
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page.
  • Share the title of the book the teaser comes from…that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!

From pg. 353 of THE STORY OF EDGAR SAWTELLE by David Wroblewski (fiction)...

"And he stole Off!, that balm of peace and contentment, that ambrosia of the skin. Heavenly, wonderful, miraculous Off!-above all, the Deep Woods variety, whose bitter flavor and greasy viscosity came to signify something as essential as food or water: a day unmauled by deerflies, a night of refuge from the mosquitoes."

I have just finished this book and enjoyed it very much. There were parts that caused a bit of disinterest but the overall effort was a success. Each answer lead to another question - just like in real life.

This week's movie topic is all about Re-Makes...

This weekend we saw a commercial for the upcoming release of Friday The 13th. Huh? Why? What could top Kevin Bacon getting shish kabobbed? Not to mention the fact that in the basement Molly has a glow in the dark hockey mask with "I know where you live..." scrawled on it by Kane Hodder who played Jason in the latter half of the series. As irritated as we are to see that Hollywood just can't leave well enough alone with this one we do realize this is nothing new. In fact, every now and then a re-make is actually as good or better than the original. Here are some of our choices...what are yours?

ON FUN ~ Butterfly Kisses...

Okey-dokey! Our first blog world Award! And it must be pretty cool because, after all, it is "For The Coolest Blog I Ever Know" (I've Ever Known?) and Jo-Jo @ Jo-Jo Loves To Read bestowed it upon us. She reads the coolest books and has a cool blog herself. So there!

This is a “meme” award, so it gets passed on. The rules for passing it on are:

1. Put the logo on your blog.
2. Add a link to the person who awarded the blog to you.
3. Award up to ten other blogs.
4. Add links to the blogs you award onto your blog.
5. Leave a message for your awardees on their blogs.

We are knighting the following blogs "SuperFly" so go check them out already! Even if they are too cool to display awards with insects on them, we wanted to show them some love:

ON BOOKS ~ Bookshelf Peep Show...

Well - I de-clare! I have joined the blog world's version of Tag, thanks to Margot @ Joyfully Retired. You see, Eva @ A Striped Armchair created The Bookshelf Meme as follows:

"It quickly becomes apparent from reading book blogs that books are not only a collection of words on paper, but also physical objects that we treasure."

With that in mind, she would like a brief glimpse onto my bookshelves! Wouldn't all you lurkers - I mean visitors. So I give in - here's a peep show for you all:

Tell me about the book that has been on your shelves the longest...

This is 1 of my 2 favorite books. I stole it from my mother who had it from when she was younger. I like to re-read it every other year or so and the binding has worn out. I keep it held together with a stiff rubber band and turn the loose pages ever so gingerly. I like the musty smell and the yellowed look. A true personal treasure.

Tell me about a book that reminds you of something specific in your life (i.e. a person, a place, a time, etc.)...

The first course I took for my Elementary Education major in college suggested that we all read this book. I was a bright eyed and bushy tailed freshman believing in all that was good in the world and how I could make a real difference with children. I have been working in the Financial Services industry from the moment I graduated. But a part of me still clings to that time and this book is a wonderful journey.

Tell me about a book you acquired in some interesting way (gift, serendipity in a used book store, prize, etc.)...

This is the other of my 2 favorite books. I didn't know it was my favorite until Andy gave it to me for Christmas a few years ago - he thought I had already read it. Until then I had only seen the movie and heard how incredibly close it came to the awesomeness of the book. Now I know. We are going to see the play this Spring. Looking forward to the trifecta.

Tell me about the most recent addition to your shelves...

I don't buy books unless I am in an airport without something to read. I borrow everything from the library or my mother. So I guess the newest addition to my shelves is Tedy - peering over the top looking for some of those bookworms he keeps hearing about.

Tell me about a book that has been with you to the most places...

For the longest time this book stayed in Andy's Jeep in the event that we found ourselves on a random drive. It has been with us from early dating day drives to our honeymoon. Now it is on the bookshelf where it helps us plan our next adventures and gets packed to ride along in the rental cars.

Tell me about a bonus book that doesn't fit any of the above questions...

The only thing I can think of is the old Atlas that Andy found in one of his old apartments he rented. You can see it next to Tedy on top of our bookshelf. It goes back to the late 1890's we think - the important page with that detail is MIA. It is wonderful because it is about as old as our current home so it is fun to flip through it and find out what the world was like for the people who built our home.

The Rules

1. Tag 3-5 people, so the fun keeps going!
2. Leave a comment at the original post at A Striped Armchair, so that Eva can collect everyone’s answers.
3. If you leave a comment and link back to Eva as the meme’s creator, she will enter you in a book giveaway contest! She has a whole shelf devoted to giveaway books that you’ll be able to choose from, or a bookmooch point if you prefer.
4. Remember that this is all about enjoying books as physical objects, so feel free to describe the exact book you’re talking about, down to that warping from being dropped in the bath water…
5. Make the meme more fun with visuals! Covers of the specific edition you’re talking about, photos of your bookshelves, etc.

GYM RATS - #5

“Now there are more overweight people in America than average-weight people. So overweight people are now average. Which means you've met your New Year's resolution.”
~Jay Leno

Two New Year’s ago I slapped on a nicotine patch and needed something to keep my mind off the butts. So I dragged Andy’s butt instead down to the local gym and signed us up for a 2 year contract. Neither of us had seen the inside of a gym past high school. Seemed like a sound investment to me.

Two years later we are still going to the gym - more stubborn than determined. As sentimental and encouraging as I should be to other gym newbies this time of year starting their own resolutions, I really just wish they would take their hopeful heinies out of my way.

After two years I have become a gym snob. I get bothered when my routine gets interrupted because someone else has the nerve to be learning how to use the weight machines. I get annoyed when the cardio machines with the individual TV’s are all in use by people not even watching the TV’s. But I get royally pissed off if all the good parking spots are filled up by the infiltration of New Year’s newbies. God forbid I actually have to walk more than a few steps to work out! Don’t these people know how much these obstacles give me reason to skip the gym entirely?

I know that if I just give it a few weeks the majority of these newbies will get tripped up by their own distractions, stress, food, and fun, never to be seen in the gym again. Is it bad that I root for weakness so I can have my gym routine back?

I think next year I will take the first two weeks of January off from my gym and let the newbies get this silly exercise idea out of their system. But we should be thankful for those persevering few who stick around. After all, they provide me with new material to share with you!

ON MUSIC ~ Dinnertime...

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY...

The Music Memoirs asks us to name our Top 5 Artists/Musicians we would like to have dinner with, and explain why. Here are Andy's solo responses - Molly decided to skip dinner:

  1. Paul McCartney - The stories he could tell, the people that he met and played with.

  2. Mick Jagger - Keith is the one you want to party with, Mick is the one you want to have dinner with.

  3. Neil Young - My favorite solo artist and one of the best songwriters ever. So many different styles over the years but it always comes back to acoustic & Crazy Horse.

  4. John Bell - Singer/Guitar and songwriter for one of my favorite bands, Widespread Panic.

  5. Bruce Springsteen - As long as we only talk music and not politics.

ON BOOKS ~ The Story of Edgar Sawtelle (again)

MizB asks you to:

  • Grab your current read.
  • Let the book fall open to a random page.
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page.
  • Share the title of the book the teaser comes from…that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!
  • Please avoid spoilers!

From pg. 169 of THE STORY OF EDGAR SAWTELLE by David Wroblewski (fiction)...

"She was a terribly dramatic child, and Edgar had a glimpse of what it must be like in her house. She was probably staging little scenes like this all the time over eating her vegetables and watching television."

ON MOVIES ~ Memorable Endings...

This week's movie topic is all about Memorable Endings...

As we look back to 2008 and welcome 2009 most of our memories are from things that happened at the close of the year. There was the crash of the U.S. stock market leading to the current recession here and globally. There was the highly anticipated presidential election which created history for our country. There was the terror in India. The weather gave a white Christmas to places that don't normally have snow. Good or bad, we certainly won't forget how 2008 came to an end. Therefore it is only appropriate that this week we consider movies known for their memorable endings. Here are some of our choices...what are yours?

ON FUN ~ Sean John Grandpa...

GYM RATS - #4

Nat @ MiniObs wants to know about Loud Old Fart. Loud Old Fart doesn’t seem to go to my gym - at least not when I‘m there - but there is Sean John Grandpa…

In the February 2007 issue of Blender magazine, Sean Combs spoke about his wardrobe. He describes his style in three words: "Swagger. Timeless. Diverse."

Sean John Combs (a.k.a. Puffy, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, and Diddy) has promoted, signed, and recorded Grammy winning music of the rap and hip hop variety, while also producing reality TV, managing restaurants and creating the Sean John men’s fashion line. He is 38 years old, handsome, loaded, talented, driven and also incredibly lucky when it comes to matters of the law.

So I ask you, why on earth is a veteran in his 70’s wearing a Sean John tank top all the time at my gym? He is a very sweet, skinny, old guy who puts in a few days at the gym each week. His tat is from his days in the military, not the hood. He is not exactly the target clientele of Sean John.

Sean John Grandpa roams aimlessly amongst the weight equipment pumping a little iron before deciding on a cardio machine. No matter how many times he uses the same machine, he is always completely lost on how it operates. He ponders it for several still minutes, trying to find the directions on how to make it work. After a while of staring at the blank screen, he starts slowly moving his arms and legs to make the machine move. Not exactly a lot of swagger there.

Sean John Grandpa is old but I wouldn’t say he is timeless. So that leaves diverse. I guess some old white guy wearing a hip hop fashion line tank top could be considered diverse. The other day he was working out wearing a knit cap. Not exactly a do-rag but it could be an attempt at gangsta.

So I chuckle every time I see Sean John Grandpa in the gym trying for the 100th time to understand how the elliptical machine works. Where on earth did he get that shirt? Did some grandchild give it to him? Or did he buy it thinking it would make him more hip with the young chicks? Maybe the shirt was just in the bargain bin wherever he shops and he wanted to be like all the other old guys with Sean John tank tops in their shopping carts.

Sean Combs should make a Senior line and call it G-Diddy: Shuffling, Aging, Conforming. Who knew that Sean John Grandpa was a trendsetter?

ON MUSIC ~ Party On Garth...

TOP 5 ON FRIDAY...

The Music Memoirs asks us to name our Top 5 Artists/Musicians we would like to party/get drunk with, and explain why:

  1. Keith Richards - to find out how he stays alive after living so hard

  2. Willie Nelson - because he certainly has the good stuff

  3. Kid Rock - he is a magnet for hot chicks (Molly just kicked Andy)

  4. Snoop Dog - because he is #2 & #3 rolled (pun intended) into one

  5. We have a debate for #5 since we are too hungover from our own New Year's Eve celebrations to use futher brain cells on finding common ground:
  • Andy suggests having a pint of Guinness with Bono (Molly thinks it is not worth listening to hours of save the world talk)
  • Molly suggests Justin Timberlake simply because he might invite Andy Samberg along to do a rendition of "D*** In A Box" (plus Andy - not Samberg, OUR Andy - would have plenty of pretty girls to ogle with JT around - everyone's happy!)

      HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

ON FUN ~ Best of 2008...

    THURSDAY THOUGHTS...

There used to be this great meme called Thursday 13, but the creators decided to stop it in December 2008 due to an illness in the family. We decided to continue on with our own version:

    Edition #1:

THURSDAY THOUGHTS from THE BUMBLES -
    about our "Best of 2008"...

    1. BEST MOVIE: We have no idea!!! We had such a busy year and what little movie viewing we did was on Netflix of older releases. In fact, the only movie we saw this year that was a new release was Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and that most certainly was NOT worthy of Best anything. We have plenty from this year on the queue though - Milk, Marley & Me, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder among others.

    2. BEST T.V.: Lost. Remember way back in the spring in Season 4 when Ben moved the island? Or whatever the heck he did to make it disappear? Waiting patiently 1 more month to be reunited with this show's awesomeness for Season 5. Also looking forward to the return of Friday Night Lights to network T.V. shortly which we also last saw way back in the beginning of 2008. To pass the time we actually got to see two seasons of Survivor - the earlier of which was incredible (Fans vs. Favorites) - the more recent (Gabon), not so much. Meanwhile, The Discovery Channel had a real version of survivor, The Alaska Experiment, which was awesome in HD. Then of course there is always Deadliest Catch. But the most pleasant surprise was the return of Tina Fey to SNL thanks to Sarah Palin.

    3. BEST BOOK: The Assist: Hoops, Hope and the Game of Their Lives, by Neil Swidey. Molly has been pimping this book everywhere she can. Excellent non-fiction writing about a high school basketball coach going way beyond normal expectations to mentor inner city teens. Just go read it already!

    4. BEST MUSIC: Check out our recent post here - but essentially we feel it was Drive By Truckers, My Morning Jacket, Spoon, David Byrne & Brian Eno as well as Duffy.

    5. BEST TRIP: This one's easy! Molly's brother got married in October (after 10 years) in Mystic, CT. To be honest, he could have gotten married in a dumpster in the ghetto and it still would have been the best trip of the year. Thankfully he didn't. Mystic is a lovely place!

    6. BEST SPORTS MOMENT: Well...it was certainly NOT the Superbowl. Don't get us started. Thankfully the Celtics came along to continue New England's incredible winning tradition. Too bad the Sox couldn't repeat - there's always next year.

    7. BEST NEWS: Duh. Goodbye to Dubya.

Keeping in the spirit of the original T13, the purpose of this post is to share some random thoughts from our lives each week with you so you continue to get to know us better. If you would like to do the same, leave a link to your blog post where you’ve shared your Thursday Thoughts or, if you don’t have a blog, share them in the comment section at the end of this post.
