ON BLOGGING ~ December Daze...

THE BUMBLES BLUEPRINT
(December, 2009)

Time for our monthly installment of The Bumbles Blueprint. Last month we covered all we promised, although we didn't share as many interesting vacation photos as we had intended. We linked to some elsewhere but the intent to feature more here got overlooked due to Turkey Day et al. Ah well.

This month we're getting into a festive, and sharing mood. We might get completely sidetracked with visions of sugarplums, but for now at least, here is a sample of what we plan to deliver to you in your Reader, In-Box or whenever you happen to stop by:

  • A recipe for those holiday parties (no stove involved - how else would Molly make it?)
  • An example of the joy of giving, and receiving
  • Camera input requests from fellow shutterbugs
  • Sharing one site that will let you get your geek on, and another that will bring out your beauty
  • Taking stock of a year in reading
  • Encouraging Resolutions

  • In addition to these posts tune in every week for our Monday Movie Meme, take part in our BlogAnon series discussions all day on Fridays, get updates on our Fantasy Football battles each Friday evening and vote on our Shutterday posts - a theme based photo contest every Saturday.

If you've got any topics you'd like us to cover, let us know and maybe we'll cover them in a post in December. Now would also be a good time to ask us questions, request updates on any prior posts, hand out compliments, make suggestions or lodge complaints. We aim to please but promise nothing.

    ON MOVIES ~ True Grit...

    Feature Presentation...
    MONDAY MOVIE MEME

Molly looked around for a weekly meme about movies and did not have any luck. So therefore she decided to start her own! Andy will play along as well - hopefully you will too. Go to your blog and create your own post on the topic, linking back to us in your post, then come back and leave a link to your post here in our Comments section. If you don’t have a blog, just share your response in the Comments section.

This week's movie topic is all about Documentaries You'd Like To See Made...

We recently watched Murderball - a documentary about wheelchair rugby. Fascinating stuff - both about the sport and the people in the chairs. We are big fans of documentaries, probably because a talented filmmaker could turn virtually any topic into a movie that was interesting, entertaining and educational. They don't all succeed but the variety out there is amazing. Still, there are some ideas that we'd love to see a documentary about that we don't think have been done yet. Here are some of Molly's ideas. Share on your blog topics that you wish someone would make a documentary about and link back here at The Bumbles. And don't forget to visit your fellow participants!

  • Three Cups of Tea - This is a non-fiction book by Greg Mortenson which tells how he came to make the promise to a poor Pakistani village in the middle of nowhere that he would build them a school. He made good on that promise and heads up a foundation building schools throughout Pakistan and Afghanistan for parents to have an option other than facilities built by terrorists recruiting their children. The schools have a special focus on ensuring that girls receive a quality education as well. It would be great if someone would follow Greg around with a video camera for just a month and turn that footage into a documentary to spread the word of his good work.
  • Plight of the Library - It would be terrific to see a documentary all about libraries, how they came into existence, how important they are in our communities, the services they can and do provide, and the impact to us if they disappear for lack of funding.
  • Behind the Photos - The Boston Globe has a feature on their website showing one of their photographer's collections. Next to each photo there is an explanation from the picture's subject of what they were thinking when that particular moment was frozen in time. It would be interesting to see a documentary of famous photos and interviews with the subjects telling the story behind the moment captured.
  • Life of a Maid - Having worked briefly as a maid, I know how sucky a job that can be. But you are privy to some private details. A documentary about maids - in hotels, in homes, for the rich and for the average - might be pretty entertaining. Why do they do it? Worst discoveries? Best surprises? Secrets kept?

ON SPORTS ~ Take That, Turkey!...

The dragon has been slayed!!! I took down Mr. Invincible last week - he of the 1 loss all season. I lost to him by less than a point the very first week and have been waiting to avenge that wrong ever since. Done. Cross that off the bucket list. Sitting pretty in 3rd place and squaring off against the guy in 2nd this week. If I beat him we are tied for 2nd and the playoffs could be in my sights. Andy? He won too - handidly. He's a couple games behind and the way this little league has gone, who knows?

As for the Ladies League I lost and now share my lead with two other ladies. This league is bigger and the races are closer. However it is also the one that I decided not to make any modifications to unless someone got hurt. Well, no one has gotten hurt lately and lets just say I wouldn't mind if a few of them did so I could slide somebody better in there. That's terrible. I would never wish for someone to get hurt in real life. Except I kind of just did. Maybe just turf toe or something.

And as for the Pick 'Em Pool - I am falling faster than ever. I have sunk to the 50's while Andy hangs in the 70's. Our married friends are sitting in the top 5 still. Hey. Good luck to them. They've got twins about to turn a year old. They could use the winnings.

But no rest for our weary selves in the Fantasy world. We gorged on turkey and football over Thanksgiving and need to keep plugging along on Sunday. I've got to hang on to my winning records!

    ROUND-UP:
Boston Babe (Molly's Team) = Last Week, Lost - Overall, 6-5
(modifying this lineup for injuries only, ladies league)

GiselleWearsThePants (Molly's team) = Last Week, Won - Overall, 6-5
Brady Goes To Miami (Andy's team) = Last Week, Won - Overall, 4-7
~head to head (Molly vs. Andy) = I don't want to talk about it (0-2)
(actively modifying this lineup, up against the boys)

    ON FUN ~ The Reveal...

Yesterday, we shared a few personal tidbits about ourselves for your amusement. We also snuck in a few fibs and asked you to pick them out. If you didn't read it you might want to do that before reading our answers. So now that you have made your guesses, here are our realities and the myths among them:

    MOLLY:

  • I did have the Chicken Pox twice in my life - a very mild case as an infant and then full blown in elementary school when I caught it from my stupid brother. I still have the scars.
  • I skipped lots of classes in High School - sometimes because I was bored with the class, sometimes because I didn't like the class and most often because some friend or another suggested it. And a few times here or there to hang out with a cute boy.
  • Speaking of cute boys, I have ended long distance relationships with two of them over the phone. It broke my heart both times because I didn't want to but someone had to face the reality we were headed towards. Which was that I was going to get my butt dumped. Beat them to the punch.
  • I had a part time job at Shoe Town in high school and college where we were taught the art of catching shoplifters by spying on them through the shoe racks. I witnessed one unlucky woman stealing shoes and signaled the cashier who alerted the authorities and then chased her out to the parking lot - the cashier, not me. I wasn't that dumb to risk getting shot over shoes.
  • I also had a job during summer break in college as a maid. Actually, my official title was Chamber Maid at an Inn in Martha's Vineyard. La-di-da. I still had to clean up other people's hairs in bathrooms. All the left behind free beer and tips wasn't enough for that job. I quit and moved back home.
  • After an overload of studying, researching and reading during college, I rarely picked up a book for pleasure for about 7 years. It wasn't until Andy's job took him on the road all the time that I started filling my free time with reading again. I haven't looked back since.
  • One morning after breakfast with Andy at a local diner, rather than backing out of my space I decided to drive straight through, and got my little Geo Prism stuck right on top of one of those concrete wheel stops. Andy and a guy from the diner had to pick up the car and slide it off (Geos were tiny little things). So embarrassing. We didn't go back to that diner, at least not in my car, for a while.
  • Cooking is not my forte, so I am generally asked to bring items to parties such as beverages and paper supplies. But a year ago I was asked to bring a salad and borrowed a festive recipe from a friend which was delicious. I mentioned it to food blogger extraordinaire, Lynn @ Queen of the Castle Recipes, who loved it so much she posted about it!
  • Living in the Northeast we have gone away on lots of camping trips in the summer and skiing trips in the winter. I became a very reliable fire builder amongst all the boys. So much so that my job at the ski condos was always to get that fire going and raging for everyone to warm up in front of after a long day out in the cold.
  • The reason I am so good at building fires is that I don't go anywhere near a ski mountain and have lots of time to practice my uber fire building techniques. I have never strapped on skis, much less won any type of downhill race.

  • ANDY:

  • I had a paper route when I was a kid and there were a few dogs along the way who barked and chased and made me skittish around dogs of all sizes. I have since grown out of that fear but it took a while.
  • I have had the same best buddy since before my paper route days - we grew up to be each other's Best Man and see each other all the time.
  • It is easy to stay in touch like that when you live in the same state your entire life.
  • This same friend and I went on vacation one year to Aruba where the foreigners often go topless. We met this really nice girl and her mom one day and had a lovely conversation - both of them were topless at the time. It was challenging to stay focused and a bit awkward.
  • I returned home one day from college to find a party going on at my parents' house. They were away and one of my underage siblings had some friends over. The cops showed up and dragged me away because when they asked who lived there I told them I did. I went absolutely ballistic in the back of the police car. I walk in on the party and get hauled away.
  • Speaking of cops, I have dialed 911 by accident - on two separate occasions. Once while trying to call a radio station and the other time while trying to call Molly back home while traveling for work. Both times the cops showed up in a flash, even though I tried to explain I had goofed.
  • In a quieter time, I was told by a woman working at the local Laundromat that I was the best folder she had ever seen. I was trained well by my mother. But now Molly does all the laundry - even though she folds my stuff all wrong.
  • Molly used to always watch ER and I just don't have the stomach for blood and guts - in real life or on a fictional TV show. At least that's the excuse I gave her for not wanting to watch ER.
  • Sometimes I don't have the stomach for the Red Sox either, but I do have a connection to their ownership group. A member of my sister-in-law's family is married to one of them.
  • Sad to say, I never had the honor of meeting Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was incredible and is greatly missed in the music world by me and anyone who appreciates guitars, blues and rock & roll.

ON FUN ~ I Spy A Little Lie...

Colleen @ Loose Leaf Notes recently posted her version of a clever little meme that we thought would be perfect to entertain you while we are taking a break over Thanksgiving with family in CT. So here's how it works. We each share 10 things about ourselves and you let us know if you have any of them in common with us. And oh yeah - one of them is a total fabrication. You've also got to guess which one from each of us is the lie. Ready? Here you go:

    MOLLY:
    1. I spent 7 years of my adult life with little to no reading of books.
    2. I have worked as a maid.
    3. I have had the Chicken Pox twice.
    4. I have broken up over the phone twice.
    5. I have had a recipe blogged about by someone else.
    6. I skipped more classes in school than there were days available for detention.
    7. I am a supreme fire builder.
    8. I won a downhill ski race.
    9. I have gotten my car stuck on top of a concrete wheel stop.
    10. I have stopped a shoplifter.

    ANDY:

    1. I spent a large part of my life afraid of dogs.
    2. I have been publicly praised for my laundry folding skills.
    3. I have thrown a nutty in the back of a cop car.
    4. I have lived in the same state my entire life.
    5. I got to meet Stevie Ray Vaughn.
    6. I have held a conversation with a topless mother and daughter.
    7. I have had the same best friend my entire life.
    8. I have a connection to Red Sox ownership.
    9. I have called 911 by accident twice.
    10. I get squeamish watching hospital shows like ER.

So do you have anything in common with either of us? And can you guess each of our fibs? Tune in tomorrow for the reveal.

ON FUN ~ The Shed Issue...

Shed As Is. That's what the listing for our house said. It is an old barn style structure located next to our house facing our patio. It is quite large and provides a good privacy screen from our neighbor's yard. My mother thinks it is wonderful. Andy thinks it is great. I wanted to have it torn down and have another one built elsewhere rather than pay to have it repaired. If we wait much longer to do something with it it just might fall down on its own.

In the five years that we have lived here we have had an addition built on our house and created a patio. We want to tackle the landscaping next, but that damn shed needs to be dealt with before we can do any of that. Andy has spent the last several years uttering my least favorite phrase of his whenever I brought up the shed issue: "Don't Worry." Keep in mind that every time I would ask him when we were going to get married during our seven year courtship his response was always "Don't Worry." When Andy says "Don't Worry" it means that he is well aware of my complaint and doesn't want to hear about it or deal with it any time soon. And it always makes me worry.

Last winter he had to put a tarp over the shed roof to protect the contents from the elements. Don't Worry. The shingles have all curled up. Don't Worry. I won a wonderful children's book from Beth Fish Reads called Albert The Fix-It Man and left it out for Andy to inspire shed repairs. His response? Don't Worry. This summer he had to hang tarps inside the shed to redirect the water leaking through the roof. Don't Worry. This fall we changed homeowner's insurance carriers and the inspector ratted our shed's condition out to the carrier. The carrier demanded shed repairs ASAP. Time To Worry.

So, Andy emptied out the shed. Then he took down all the tarps. One day he had a dumpster delivered and stripped off the roof shingles. He did calculations and had wood and shingles delivered. And then, finally, he convinced a friend and some neighbors to replace the roof. The time and effort to patch the holes wasn't worth the effort so they ripped it all off and laid down new boards. They repaired the beams inside. And then it got dark and they got thirsty so the tarp went back on and the shingles will wait until another day.

But the insurance carrier is content now. The roof won't collapse on anyone and our stuff won't get damaged from leaks anymore. However, because Andy didn't get motivated until Thanksgiving we are running out of good weather up here. So we will have a lovely dumpster sitting in our side yard through the winter with a tarp on the shed to protect the wood. But come spring time, Andy tells me he'll get those shingles on and replace all the siding as well as the windows. He even has plans to install a wood stove in there for those chilly nights after a skate on the backyard rink. At least that's what he tells me his plans are. Don't Worry.

ON MOVIES ~ We Are The Champions...

This week's movie topic is all about Victory...

Molly went to the Patriots/Jets game Sunday and kicked her heels up in the air celebrating a slam dunk victory by the Pats. She got so giddy over it that she decided this week's movie topic should revel in all things victorious. Share on your blog movies focusing on champions, victories and winners and link back here at The Bumbles. And don't forget to visit your fellow participants to find their recommendations!

  • Miracle (1994) - More than just an Olympic hockey win
  • The Incredible Journey (1963) - The original version, of very determined pets
  • Erin Brockovich (2000) - Never underestimate a motivated lady, especially when your effect on water kills people
  • Wildcats (1986) - *Football* thanks Goldie ;0)
  • Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) - Victory is in the eye of the beholder, at least to one British soldier

ON SPORTS ~ Movin' On A Sunday Afternoon...

While I am movin' on up like the Jeffersons in my Fantasy Football world, I am sucking wind picking winners in the pool. To add insult to injury, people that I have invited to play in this pool are now swarming all over the highly coveted top spots for the big overall payout. Our good friend is holding down 4th place. Her hubby - new to the pool this year - is in 2nd. His sister and her boyfriend are in 7th. I have fallen out of the 20's and am clinging to the 30's by my nails in need of a manicure. Andy fell back to the 70's.

Considering Carolina lost to the Bills of all lame teams we are both going to continue to sink like stones this week too. I warned you this is how it goes for me each season - first to worst. But I didn't anticipate such stellar performances from my friends. Now that I think about it, I have had two other friends that I invited into the pool win the whole damn thing. I need to stop inviting friends to join in - they aren't watering down the competition - they're cashing in!!!

On to happier happenings. I won won won in both Fantasy leagues! In the Ladies League my opponent, the Redskins fan, celebrated a victory by her real team but got not one, but TWO negative point performances out of her lineup. Victory for moi. I now sit at the top of the division. Incredible. My team that I had no say in drafting is sitting pretty.

As for the Boys League, I pulled myself out of the middle of the pack by winning - my second duplicate victory over an opponent this season - and sit in 3rd. Granted, there are only six of us so technically I am in the true middle of the pack. But I am in front of three other boys. One of them being Andy. He is tied for last with the Commish. And the guy I beat last week is between them and me.

I get to go toe to toe with Mr. Invincible this week - he of only one loss. He has already CLINCHED a frickin' playoff spot. There are still like five more weeks or something before the Fantasy playoffs start. The dude's team is stacked. But so is mine. I'm gonna try to bring him back down to Earth. Cross those fingers, toes, legs and eyes. Giselle needs all the luck she can get.

    ROUND-UP:
Boston Babe (Molly's Team) = Last Week, Won - Overall, 6-4
(modifying this lineup for injuries only, ladies league)

GiselleWearsThePants (Molly's team) = Last Week, Won - Overall, 5-5
Brady Goes To Miami (Andy's team) = Last Week, Lost - Overall, 3-7
~head to head (Molly vs. Andy) = I don't want to talk about it (0-2)
(actively modifying this lineup, up against the boys)

    ON BLOGGING ~ Analyze This...

    BlogAnon: Joy of Confession

Image by Cool Text: Logo and Graphics Generator

Welcome to our weekly BlogAnon meeting where we confess a particular blogging sin and turn to you for support, suggestions and that blogging bond so we know we're not all alone. Don't be shy. Read along and let us know if you identify with us this week.

I am a very lazy Bumble. If I could get paid to procrastinate I would never have to work again. There are lots of tweaks I want to make to our blog. I would like to add some tabs perhaps, decide what to do about the Blog Roll widget at the bottom of the page, see if there's any way to improve our header. I'd really rather just wake up one day and find it all re-vamped and beautiful. Let someone else take a shot at it and see how they might tidy things up. Ha! Fat chance. But I have had someone else take a look at it in the past and that little exercise helped our blog to evolve into the current phase.

How would you like to be a fly on the wall watching a first time visitor to your blog? Would you want to know what they clicked on? Where they went? Would you like to know if they struggled to find their way around or what things drew them in? You can get lots of stats from Google Analytics about page views and sources, but you can't get any feedback that way - not like the fly would give.

Our blogging friend, DS of Third-Storey Window, left a comment during my recent Pet Peeves post saying it sure would be nice to get feedback about her blog. So I asked her if she wanted to be a guinea pig. I asked her if she would like to get matched up with a perfect stranger and exchange reviews of each other's blogs. Being a woman of her word, she agreed to hear feedback. After finding out which blogs she knew and which she didn't I was able to match her up with another blogging friend of ours, Kaye of The Road Goes Ever On. Kaye just reached her first year blogoversary and was wondering in which direction she should go, so she agreed to take part in this exercise.

I introduced Kaye and DS to each other through e-mail and gave them a list of evaluation questions taken directly from ProBlogger's Build A Better Blog assignment that I took part in earlier this year. I instructed them to visit each other's blog and have a look around. Explore and observe. Then go ahead and read the review questions, answer them honestly and uncensored, then e-mail the responses to each other. In exchange I asked them each to let me know what they thought of the experience - both as a reviewer and one being reviewed. Here is a taste of what they shared...

DS: "I have to confess that I was more nervous about reviewing someone else's blog than about being reviewed myself...We put so much of ourselves into our blogs, whether we realize it or not; I did not wish to hurt anyone's feelings...I found that the questions alone forced me to consider my own blog in a new way, even as I was using them to examine Kaye's place. I do believe--strongly--that I got the better end of the deal...Kaye was able to zero in on a problem--and provide a detailed solution...I am grateful for the review,...thrilled to have met someone new, determined to increase my limited skills and do a better job, and once again astounded by the generosity of this community as a whole...I will definitely implement some of Kaye's suggestions and am glad to know her. That, I think, is the most important thing...That was incredibly helpful and reinforces my feeling that bloggers are some of the most generous people around."

Kaye: "I'm a little nervous to see what she thinks of my site...after a year of blogging I've been wondering why I do it and what my plan should be as I move into my second year...the evaluation will give me an objective view of what I've done and give me a basis to set my direction...She had a lot of positive things to say, and also mentioned a few things I could do to improve. Many of them were things I already felt needed to be done...DS told me she feels like there is a woman to know hiding behind the memes. I think she hit the core...She said she thought my blog was about my family and my books. I think that's how I started. I think that's where I should go...this whole evaluation thing. I really needed it...I am now following her and I notice she is following me."

DS was nervous about reviewing, Kaye was nervous about being reviewed. Kaye not only gave some suggestions to DS, she told her about the tools she could use to implement them. DS gave Kaye encouragement constructively and reinforced the very direction Kaye herself had been considering. They learned from each other and discovered a new blogging friend along the way. Based on honesty and help. That's a great blogging experience. I'm so glad they found the intended spirit behind the exercise. It isn't about what someone thinks is better or worse - it is about seeing things from a different perspective and learning from new ideas. And it doesn't hurt to make a new friend in the process.

I got so inspired by their energy that I even went and created myself my own logo for BlogAnon. No more pirating for me. Now that I've found a tool to use, I can create all kinds of different styles. This is just one example. So give me some feedback. I don't want to be a lazy Bumble anymore. Share your perspective and ideas. Inspire me.

Have you ever had your blog reviewed? Would you be brave enough to ask a friend, family member or co-worker to give you input? Do you have interest in finding a "new to you" blogger to pair up with? Shout it out in your Comment - or send me an e-mail and I can pass along the review questions to you. Don't be afraid to share - your blogger thoughts are safe with us - and others!

P.S. In creating a link to Darren's site, I noticed that ProBlogger just began a new feature called "Review This Blog" - not sure how you get your blog considered but it is an open forum for all readers to provide input on the selected blog. Check it out!

ON FUN ~ The Furry Family...

Andy made a rule for our house a long time ago that says we cannot have more pets than people. It should be noted that his fish do not count toward this total. But cats and other furry creatures do.

When we first joined households I brought two fur balls with me and Andy had one of his own. They were indoor Petey and Cleo meeting up with outdoor Elvis. Petey and Elvis got along alright, but the King was deathly afraid of little Cleo, so she became the Queen. Cleo tormented that cat to her grave. Ambushes. Hissing. Downright evil. When Petey - the most tolerant and greatest cat to ever live - was alive, he brokered the peace quite nicely. And for about 24 hours after he died unexpectedly on our first wedding anniversary, Cleo considered rubbing up against good 'ole Elvis. But her loneliness passed and her mean streak prevailed.

When the beautiful Cleo - the softest cat to ever live - stunned us by getting ill suddenly and dying out of the blue, Elvis was the only one happy about it. He finally got to be King again and for once in his many lives of broken hips and missing teeth he ruled the home in peace and quiet.

When the King finally left our world at a ripe old age, clinging to his beloved outdoors to his last day, we found ourselves empty. Nothing to come home to but the fish.

Pets are more than just things that hang around to entertain you - or frustrate you. They are living creatures with emotions, personalities and needs. Generally you, the humans, go and pick them out from a shelter or from someone who has little babies to give away. Every now and then one of them adopts you buy showing up at your door. They work their way into your life and your heart by the looks they give you, the love they provide without request and the stupid things they get into which make you laugh - after the fact.

I don't trust people who don't like children or animals. They are both innocent and defenseless. Oh sure - Fido can bite you and Felix can scratch you - but if you want to harm them, you hold the upper hand. You want to kick that pet around or starve it to death you can. Leave it trapped in a hot car. Or tied up outside in the elements without shelter or water. You can place it in an environment fraught with danger. All the same evil things people can do to little kids if they are so inclined.

I wonder about those who question grief for a lost or deceased pet. Have they not ever looked into the watery eyes of a dog or cat? The eyes are where the soul resides. And when you see a soul, you welcome it in to your heart. That's when they become important in your life, a part of your family. A creature to interact with, learn from, and miss when you are apart.

Because our house was empty after so many years of cat fights we decided to take in two little fur balls. That didn't exceed Andy's people to pet ratio. They reminded us just how psychotic kittens can be. Nothing is safe. Training a cat is an oxymoron. And we are the morons who tried to train them. We lost.

But we gained another furry family. A brother and sister who drive us mad while making us smile. They move from wrestling to snuggling in one swift move. They are very different personalities who aren't happy without each other around. And more than anything else, they want to be with us. They will leave a warm lap in a sound sleep when they hear that familiar car pull in the driveway. They push each other out of the way for the best spot in the crook of Andy's legs. But most of all, they look at us with those big watery eyes and melt our hearts. Tedy and Lucy have us wrapped around their tails, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

ON BOOKS ~ Lollipop Book Club...

Last week I wrote an article for LifeSnips which was all about how to inspire your kids to read. This is a matter near and dear to my heart. I grew up a bookworm. And I have a degree in Elementary Education. There is nothing more exciting than being there when the lightbulb goes off for a child when they begin to recognize letters as words and words open the window to learning. I wish that my well intended dreams and desires of becoming a teacher had led me to an actual job in education but the market was tight and my dreams and desires of food on the table took over and landed me in the world of finance. And to think I despised math.

So whenever I can I try to motivate children to pick up a book. I lend my sentimental childhood favorites to my neighbor's kids. I read to my friend's kids. I write articles to give parents creative tools to help spread the reading bug. I donate to our local library in cash and by volunteering to keep the place open for readers of all levels. But my favorite effort is buying books for my nieces and nephews each year for Christmas.

As much as I love browsing shelves - real or virtual - for classic favorites, creative new tales and award winners it does get expensive when I get carried away. Not to mention that books are not always as exciting as some flashy toy in eye-catching packaging. Although I know they enjoy them eventually, they sometimes get treated like a new pair of socks amongst all of the other holiday loot.

Well just imagine my glee when I came across a website for a children's book of the month club. A very enterprising lady named Karen was stumped as to how to make books more exciting for her kids. So she decided to mail a few to her own house in each of her kids' names. Bingo. That got their attention. Who doesn't enjoy receiving a package in the mail? She turned that simple idea into a business which gift giving book lovers everywhere can benefit from - the Lollipop Book Club.

You can sign up for packages ranging in duration and catering to age, boys or girls, special occassions or create your own selections. Each month the lucky kiddo receives a bright red package in the mail addressed to them. It contains a new book with a personalized message from you on a special sticker on the inside cover. And they get a super cool lollipop to boot! The site is very flexible to you as the customer and the selection is good. And for the presentation and effort involved, the pricing seems fair.

It appears I may have found a new way to spoil our nieces and nephews with books! And it lets me continue with my dream of inspiring another generation of bookworms. Maybe I should have included the Lollipop Book Club in my LifeSnips article. What do you think?

ON MOVIES ~ To Die For...

This week's movie topic is all about Death Scenes...

Last week we talked about movies that changed our life - deep stuff! So this week we're doing a 180 and talking about death. No - not movies that scared us to death or about mourning. We mean those memorable death scenes. If you've ever seen HBO's Six Feet Under, you know that each episode opened with the death scene of a person soon to be taken care of at the family's funeral home. The writers got pretty creative coming up with interesting ways for characters to die each week. Movies of all kinds provide death scenes of all shapes and sizes. Humorous, horrifying, tear jearking, realistic and ridiculous. Here are a few that stood out for us. WARNING!!! It is impossible for these not to be spoiler-free. Play at your own risk. Share on your blog scenes depicting death and link back here at The Bumbles. And don't forget to visit your fellow participants to find their recommendations!

  • Lethal Weapon - Death by nail gun - who knew the construction tool could be so versatile?
  • Fatal Attraction - That psycho lady just did NOT want to go easy did she? Soaking in a tub has never been quite so relaxing since that movie for some reason.
  • Training Day - How many bullets does it take to bring down Denzel anyway? This was realllllly reminiscent of the classic Godfather scene.
  • Full Metal Jacket - Ugh. One of the most visually brutal suicides in cinema. Not for the faint of heart.
  • Bambi - Disney created a real heart breaking scene when he killed off Bambi's mom.
  • Pulp Fiction - Poor Marvin.
  • Friday the 13th - Kevin Bacon getting shish kabobbed in bed from below was extremely clever and gorifyingly great.
  • Goodfellas - Billy Batts gets bludgeoned. Temper, temper Tommy! DeNiro & Pesci have fun kicking ass here.
  • Do you have a topic to suggest to the Monday Movie Meme? Leave it in the Comments section or send us an e-mail.

ON SPORTS ~ Hangin' With The Boys...

I think it has been extremely polite of our Fantasy League Commissioner to lose not once, but twice, to a girl. It has made me feel so welcome in the boy's league! The Commish now has the distinction of being the only team I have beat more than once. I own his ass.

Meanwhile, Andy suffered defeat and has the distinction of being tied for last place with The Commish. Hahahahahaha! Oh c'mon. Let me have my moment. They are the only two teams I'm ahead of in the standings. This week our roles could easily be reversed. Although since Andy is matched up against the top dog who has only lost once all season, somehow I don't feel good karma heading his way. I'm matched up with mediocrity in the middle - I've beat this opponent before and I plan to do it again. Even if I did spot him 40 points from Thursday night's game. Yikes.

In the Ladies' League I fell asleep at the wheel and forgot to switch my Defense option. So that meant that while Da Bears were getting run over, my score was plumetting. No matter. Even if I had used my other option - Atlanta's D - instead it still wouldn't have been quite enough to beat my foe. This week I am duking it out with a Redskins fan who is tied with me for tops in the Division. While my SF Running Back was busy running all over the field and racking up points for me Thursday night, her Chicago QB was busy throwing 5 interceptions and no TD's which in Fantasy world results in a measly 2 points. QB's are usually good for 15 - 20. So I'm hoping to cruise to another victory and take over 1st place by myself.

As for the Pick 'Em Pool, I had a shot at the top but the Broncos lost to the Steelers and that left me out of the money. I'm still clinging to the 20's while Andy is in the 60's - only 30 points behind! This is when it starts getting real interesting. All the teams will be back in the mix for the remainder of the year after this week when all the bye games have passed. And that means more choices to make with key implications on those overall scores. Do we have any more weekly victories in us? Can I pull back up in to the top 10? The weeks are already running out - game on.

    ROUND-UP:
Boston Babe (Molly's Team) = Last Week, Lost - Overall, 5-4
(modifying this lineup for injuries only, ladies league)

GiselleWearsThePants (Molly's team) = Last Week, Won - Overall, 4-5
Brady Goes To Miami (Andy's team) = Last Week, Lost - Overall, 3-6

    ON BLOGGING ~ Blog Snob...

Welcome to our weekly BlogAnon meeting where we confess a particular blogging sin and turn to you for support, suggestions and that blogging bond so we know we're not all alone. Don't be shy. Read along and let us know if you identify with us this week.

I am a grammar snob. My biggest problem is when people say "good" when they mean "well." I cringe when people mispronounce a word on a regular basis, or make one up entirely - a la "irregardless." But I bite my tongue to the point of pain because I don't want someone following me around and correcting me whenever I make a mistake.

It took me half my life to learn to spell "tired" correctly. I always spelled it "tierd" because when sounding it out - like Hooked On Phonics told me to do - that is how it seemed it should be. It sounds like TIE-rd, not ti-RED. Enough teachers and the evolution of Spell Check finally drilled the correct spelling through my thick skull. But because I wasn't the world's best speller didn't mean I was dumb. I had a lot to offer and wanted to be taken seriously.

In the blogosphere, when I see a post lacking in proper grammar I still cringe, but I keep reading. I know from my spelling struggles that it doesn't mean that blogger is stupid. Instead of being lazy, maybe they are misinformed, have a learning disability or are writing in a second language. Whatever the case, I can set aside my snobbish inclinations to find out what the blogger has to say.

I come across SAHM blogs everywhere. Not being one myself, it would be easy for me to discount their blog as nothing but cute pictures of toddlers. Yippee. Your kid is cute. Great for you. Let me know when you have something important to write about. And if I reacted that way I would miss out on some incredible posts from women who do more than vent about diapers. They speak of self-worth, respect, responsibility, frustration, anger, grace and love. They put up the photos to give themselves a break from all the inner work. And they also deserve to brag.

Having a pet peeve doesn't make you a snob. Thinking you are better than someone else makes you a snob. It also makes you intolerant. And basically, you shut so many doors on your own opportunities for discovery that some day you will end up ignorant and therefore overlooked yourself.

Do you struggle with blog snobbery? Have you ever decided to dig deeper into a blog that on the surface looked unworthy of your time? Did they surprise you? Don't be afraid to share - your blogger thoughts are safe with us.

ON FUN ~ Pay It Forward...

Have you seen the movie Pay It Forward? I haven't. But I do know the premise. Instead of paying someone back for a favor, do a favor for them in advance of needing something - a good deed so to speak. And they are so thankful for said favor that they in turn do something nice for others unsolicited, etc. etc. Wonderful concept. But who ever actually really does that?

Enter Terry Kate of Romance In The Back Seat. She studied film and enjoys making documentaries. She also loves romance - novels in particular. She had the bright idea to interview romance writers in the back seat of a car and let them share their craft with interested fans of their work and the genre. So she posts them on her main site along with links to lots of other fun and informative things.

If you are not familiar with her you will really enjoy meeting her. In addition to being creative and daring she is also pretty frickin' thoughtful. Every day in November she has allowed an author to guest post on RITBS' Blog about what or whom they are thankful for. They then donate one of their books to be given away. In order to be eligible to win that day's book you need to leave a comment explaining who YOU will give the book to if you are chosen as the winner.

You meet a great blogger, you read some inspiring posts, you learn about all these different books, you leave a comment for those you like, and if you win - you receive a free gift to give to someone else. Could be a neighbor, a family member, a hospital patient, a shelter, a co-worker, a library, a senior home, that cashier you see every morning for your coffee, or a complete stranger. That part is up to you.

Pretty original idea. Pretty incredible opportunity. If you want to take part, click .HERE

ON BOOKS ~ A Tree Grows In Brooklyn...

    "Wonderful story.
Clearly paints a picture in your mind of the crueltys, hardships, and joys of early 1900's lifestyle in the city of Brooklyn, New York.
    Truley a classic novel.
If there all girls were like Francie, the world would be a better place to live."

-Molly C. (long before she was Molly G.)

Forget for a moment the spelling errors in that quote. Or the fact that Brooklyn was no longer its own city in the early 1900's but rather a borough of NYC. I was just a kid when I wrote my review on the inside of the cover of a paperback copy of A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. Best I can figure, I read it the summer before I turned 14. I had just moved to CT and was preparing to start my freshman year of high school as the new kid without any friends other than the characters I met in my books. So it is no wonder I identified with Francie Nolan.

If you have never read this classic novel, it tells the tale of the Nolan family, primarily through young Francie's eyes, living in poverty in Brooklyn in the early 1900's. The Nolans have a way of sucking it up and getting things done. They don't complain but always strive for better things in life for the future. They believe strongly in family and education and those ideals give Francie and her brother a reliable base from which to build. Francie is a loner who is often on the outside looking in, so she loses herself in books, her imagination and writing. She gets dealt an overdose of life lessons as the story follows her from ages 11 to 17. And your heart goes out to this determined young girl as you root for her to get lucky in life.

Well let me tell you, it must have felt comforting to have Francie in my corner while I was adjusting to a new place, all alone except for my family. She loved to read and write stories. So did I. She got picked on in school. So had I. She had a little brother who generally meant well but had his own friends and things to do. She had a determined mother from a line of strong minded women. She was her daddy's little girl. Bingo - just like my family. I must have wanted to make Francie my best - and only - friend in my new town. No wonder I thought the world would be a better place if everyone was like her. That would mean they were kind and smart and sensitive - especially to girls like me.

Thankfully I found some real life girls who took me under their wing the first few weeks of high school and they remain my dear friends to this very day. They made my new town feel like a place I could think of as home. And I didn't need to drown myself in books and writing - I could actually join the world of the living. But Francie got me through that rough patch. She was just what I needed.

When I found the musty old paperback on the bookshelves at my parents' on a recent visit back to CT I borrowed it since I didn't remember much other than a strong sense of sentimentality and fondness. Imagine my surprise when, months later, I opened it up and found my teenage review. I was even more intrigued to re-discover this story. I would have to say that my original review was spot on. The world needs more Francies in it. But if you don't have one handy, you can always go right to the source and bond with the girl in the book.

    ON MOVIES ~ Deep Impact...

This week's movie topic is all about Life Changers...

Our blogging buddy Cardiogirl wanted to know if we had ever covered movies that changed our lives or our world view. Huh. Unless you count our post on Eye Candy, I would have to say we have not touched on that topic before. It is an interesting question - what movies had such an impact that they caused a change in our behavior, beliefs, or exposed us to a new passion? Here's what we came up with. Share on your blog movies that caused a major impact in your life link back here at The Bumbles. And don't forget to visit your fellow participants to find their recommendations!

    MOLLY'S CHOICE:
  • Super Size Me (2004) - I stopped eating at McDonald's after watching this documentary. Although the movie is quite humorous, it was also appalling and opened my eyes to just how bad fast food in general can be for your health. I overhauled my entire diet and exercise outlook not long after renting this. It wasn't the reason but it certainly armed me with facts and motivation during that process.
  • ANDY'S CHOICE:
  • The Natural (1984) - I'm not sure any movie has "changed my life." However, one did create something special for me. My father doesn't like going to the movies and there is a 6 year gap between me and my youngest sibling (there are 4 of us). So this is the only movie I can ever remember seeing in the theater with my entire family. It appealed to the different age groups, our shared love of sports and created a nice memory. It was a good movie too and whenever I see it I think of my family. That's a pretty cool way to have a movie make an impact.

    ON SPORTS ~ King Andy...

When you're good, you're good. There was just no beating Andy last week. And to his credit - he didn't talk any smack, gloat or become obnoxious in any way. Which is the complete opposite of how I would have reacted. Where's the fun in it all if you can't rub it in and do a little Touchdown Dance along the way?

As the games unfolded, Andy was making the most of the nice day by getting some work done outside. When he came in after the early games he started watching the scores come in and commented that he thought he was doing pretty well with his picks in the Pick 'Em Pool. I gave it no thought because he was in 98th place overall. Getting half of them right would feel pretty good to him.

At the end of the day I checked the standings and wondered if my eyes were playing tricks on me because there at the top was Andy's name. Not an imposter. Andy. And not only was he at the top, he was in the lead by a large margin above everyone else. Turned out that his lead was so strong, it didn't even matter who won the last game of the week on Monday night. He came in first and finally pulled his weight in the pool for a change. I came in 90th. Ack. So you know what that means - free fall out of 7th overall back down to the 20's. Andy's peak performance moved him up to 80th.

As for our big re-match in the Boys' League, he kicked my butt there too for the second time this season. It seems I'm one of the few teams he has no trouble beating. And nothing I do works against him. My managerial skills must be distracted by his handsome looks. Don't ask me. All I know is that he took no pity on his wife because - as he said - he needed the win badly. I was down by 20 points going into Monday night's game. At the end of the evening he'd won by 50. He's caught back up to me in the standings and now we both sit at the bottom of the league along with the Commish. Fantasy futility. I get to try my hand at the Commish again this week. One of us is going to be better off than the other at the end of the weekend. Let's hope he can lose to a girl twice in one season.

On the bright side, in the Ladies' League I won by 80 points to someone who obviously wasn't playing along anymore because she left key spots unfilled with her starters due to byes. I felt bad winning this way before, but after losing to such an opponent by 1 point last week I'll take any kind of win I can get. I'm tied for the lead in my division and matched up with someone with the same leading record I have in the other division this week. Should be a good showing and I'm looking forward to it.

So a round of applause for Andy's awesome week. And fingers crossed for me to get back on track this week. Root hard for the Brady bunch this week against Miami - I need the points!

    ROUND-UP:
Boston Babe (Molly's Team) = Last Week, Won - Overall, 5-3
(modifying this lineup for injuries only, ladies league)

GiselleWearsThePants (Molly's team) = Last Week, Lost - Overall, 3-5
Brady Goes To Miami (Andy's team) = Last Week, Lost - Overall, 3-5
~head to head (Molly vs. Andy) = I don't want to talk about it (0-2)
(actively modifying this lineup, up against the boys)

    ON BLOGGING ~ Pet Rocks...

Welcome to our weekly BlogAnon meeting where we confess a particular blogging sin and turn to you for support, suggestions and that blogging bond so we know we're not all alone. Don't be shy. Read along and let us know if you identify with us this week.

So here's the deal. I hate some of your blogs. You make it difficult for me to enjoy my stay. You see, I have pet peeves that are a challenge to overcome. I fight through my annoyance in order to get to the content that I know will reward me for my efforts. I go through this trouble because I appreciate strong opinions, sweet stories, deep thoughts and humor. I just wish you wouldn't make it so difficult for me to visit.

We all have pet peeves in life - so why be surprised that they exist in the blogosphere too? If we all liked the same things the world would be a boring place. So therefore you either find a way to live with what bugs you or you avoid the stuff that does. And no blogger wants to be avoided.

I hate auto tunes. That is a killer for me. I, like my husband, enjoy music. It is a big part of our lives. But I don't want it shoved in my ears when I go to a blog. Display your playlist and let me decide when to turn it on and when to leave it off. If your widget won't allow for such a feature, please display it somewhere right at the top so I don't have to frantically scroll around looking for the OFF button on your blog. Others might not be so patient and will just go elsewhere.

I save your blog for my Reader because the sound doesn't kick on through there. But I think twice going to leave a comment sometimes because I don't want to brace myself for the tunes. If I happen to enjoy your selections, it isn't quite as bad, but in general it is like when you accidentally forget to turn the volume on your alarm clock down. And I know, I have a mute button on my laptop. I use it often. But why make me annoyed to begin with?

I dislike moving ads on blogs. The ones that dance and wiggle, blink and flash. They make things run more slowly and distract my eyes from the posts I came to read. And they make me question the purpose of the blog to begin with. I love my DVR that lets me fast forward through commercials. I change the radio station when an ad comes on. Flashy ads make me want to leave your blog.

And speaking of ads, I dislike cluttered sidebars in general. I get a bit overwhelmed with all that information. I put my blinders on to focus on your posts in the center of my screen. But I keep getting distracted by all those shiny awards, ads, blog rolls, widgets and of course, the musical playlist. I enjoy an informative side bar that tells a lot of information about you and what you love. Don't let it get lost in all the clutter.

OK. I feel better. I know that I'm not alone. Some people share my pet peeves. And others will defend their choices to end of the blogosphere. And that's why freedom is a great thing. I'm sure some of you have pet peeves about our little corner right here. Our posts are too frequent, or too long. We cross promote to my outside articles too often. We have too many photos or can't seem to focus on one simple niche. You can't please everyone. But sometimes, if only people would share their issues, we see things from a whole new perspective and make an adjustment because, now that you mention it, that thing we do is annoying to us too!

What's your biggest pet peeve on blogs? Has anyone ever suggested you make a change? Have you ever brought up your pet peeve to a blogger? And by all means, go ahead and give us some productive criticism if we're a prime culprit. Don't be afraid to share - your blogger thoughts are safe with us.

    ON FOOD ~ Kitchen Essentials...

We've introduced you to Lynn of Queen of the Castle Recipes before on our blog via an award post back in January. As you may know, I am not the cook in the family. That responsibility and talent lies with Andy. So you may wonder how it came to be that I would have befriended someone who has a recipe blog.

Lynn stumbled upon The Bumbles one day via one of our earliest posts that I published about a baseball book. You see, in addition to being a terrific cook, author, Mom and Queen of her castle, Lynn is a big baseball fan. It may be the only thing she and I have in common! Well, that and our sense of humor.

Her blog posts a variety of recipes she has made - of her own doing and ones submitted by her readers or from cookbooks, magazines or cooking sites she admires. But what makes her posts of interest to me is that she always tells us the story behind why she's tried it out. Or how the process went. Or how it turned out. She even posts the ones that would be considered a "Fail." She talks about how to cook fish in your dishwasher. Or about unsuccessfully using the piping hot hood of a car as a cooking surface. Don't worry. She generally uses traditional methods and makes delicious dishes. But it is that creativity and instinct to think outside the box that drew me to her and keeps me coming back for more recipes to talk Andy into testing out.

So when I had an idea for a cooking related post over on Lifesnips I knew just the person to turn to. No - not Andy! Lynn.

By collaborating with Lynn via e-mail interviews we created a post of 10 Simple Essential Tools That Should Be In Your Kitchen (But Probably Aren't). I needed something that would be easy enough for novices but could provide a few new tips for the old pros as well. And I wanted to entertain - even those who could care less about cooking or kitchens.

I think I succeeded in reaching these goals - thanks in large part to Lynn. So hop on over and decide for yourself. Be sure to leave a Comment over there for her to see - and by all means share your own essential suggestions. The Lifesnips audience might learn something from you too!

I'm always looking for new ideas for Lifesnips posts. If you have a topic you'd like to see covered, send me an e-mail. Who knows - maybe some day you'll be the featured interview!

    ON BLOGGING ~ November News...

    THE BUMBLES BLUEPRINT
    (November, 2009)

Time for our monthly installment of The Bumbles Blueprint. Last month we broke from our regular blueprint format to tell the tale of our first year of blogging. It was fun for us to look back and summarize our first year's experiences in the blogosphere. But it also meant that we didn't plot out a post schedule for the month and that resulted in an interesting experiment. It appears that without that mapped out guide, we fall apart. Without a nice list to reference each evening we wasted a lot of time wondering what to post about and it left us in a blah state of affairs as touched upon somewhat in our last BlogAnon post about Memes.

So since we like experiments we decided not to participate in Thursday Thirteen this month to allow for more non-meme related posts and to find out what kind of an impact it might have in our visitor stats. We'll let you know how that goes! And since we've learned our lesson about operating without a net, here is a sample of what we plan to deliver to you in your Reader, In-Box or whenever you happen to stop by:

  • Renovation adventures - motivated by a book giveaway received from Beth Fish Reads
  • How pets become family
  • Collaboration with a fellow blogger - on kitchens no less!
  • Revisiting a classic novel from childhood
  • Vacation shots
  • Blogging pet peeves, snobbery and other habits in the blogosphere

  • In addition to these posts tune in every week for our Monday Movie Meme, updates on our Fantasy Football battles each Friday evening and Shutterday posts - a theme based photo contest every Saturday.

If you've got any topics you'd like us to cover, let us know and maybe we'll cover them in a post in November. Now would also be a good time to ask us questions, request updates on any prior posts, hand out compliments, make suggestions or lodge complaints. We aim to please but promise nothing.

    ON MOVIES ~ The Sopranos...

This week's movie topic is all about Mobsters...

This weekend we saw lots of Trick Or Treaters dressed as Superheroes, Star Wars characters, Hobos, Fairies, Thomas the Train and even a few ghouls. But we never saw any mobsters. Maybe that is because it is tough to fashion a Tommy Gun out of a shoebox. But one thing is for sure, if a mobster rang our bell looking for a treat we would oblige ASAP. We've seen enough of their movies to know the kind of tricks they dole out. Here are our Top 3 - since we feel like we've been hogging all the good titles each week. Share on your blog mafia movies that left their mark with you and link back here at The Bumbles. And don't forget to visit your fellow participants to find their recommendations!

  • Goodfellas (1990) - What it is like to be a member of the Mafia. Scorsese explores the ins and outs of how the world works for a mobster as seen through Ray Liotta's (beautiful) eyes while he pals around with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci with an extremely violent Napolean complex.
  • The Untouchables (1987) - What it is like to take on the Mafia as a Federal Agent - Eliot Ness vs. Al Capone. De Palma directs Costner, Connery, De Niro, Garcia. Doesn't get much better than this.
  • Donnie Brasco (1997) - What it is like to infiltrate the Mafia as an undercover cop. Johnny Depp and Al Pacino are marvelous here.
  • We just realized all of our choices are based on true stories. Maybe that extra reality is why we love them so much. A bonus selection - purely fictional but with a heavy aside to infamous mobster on the run Whitey Bulger is another Scorsese gem - The Departed. DiCaprio, Damon and Nicholson star in this heart pounding thriller from the Boston side of things. So forgive us the extra pick.
